New Delhi: Vlade Divac, one of Serbian basketball's greatest exports to the NBA, brought his experience and message of perseverance to the Capital on Friday. The former Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Charlotte Hornets center, who won two Olympic silver medals (1988 and 1996) and two world championship gold medals (1990 and 2002), interacted with over 100 students from schools across Delhi during an event organized by the US Embassy India and the Sacramento Kings.
Basketball Clinic and Motivational Talks
The 58-year-old oversaw basketball drills, skills sessions, and motivational talks centered on teamwork, education, and discipline. He praised the enthusiasm and talent displayed by the young Indian players, particularly the girls taking part in the clinic. "India's massive youth population gives the country enormous potential to become a force in global basketball if they do the right things," he said.
Message of Perseverance
"It really doesn't matter where you're born; you can achieve your dreams if you work hard and do the right things," Divac said. Speaking about the challenges of adapting from Serbia to the NBA, Divac credited his early coaching system for shaping his game. "We had a good programme back home with coaches who developed my game very well and put me on a level where I could go to the NBA and perform," he said.
Importance of Fitness and Preparation
Divac also highlighted the importance of fitness and preparation in sustaining a long career. He emphasized that young athletes should focus on their education and discipline alongside sports to achieve success.
