Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has taken on a new sporting role. On Thursday, he was officially named the goodwill ambassador for the Pune Grand Tour 2026. This event marks a historic moment as India's first international cycling road race.
A Historic Event for Indian Cycling
The Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026 represents a major milestone for professional cycling in India. It is the country's first UCI 2.2 category multi-stage race. This five-day continental road cycling competition for men will run from January 19 to January 23, 2026.
The race firmly places India on the global professional cycling circuit. It will cover a challenging 437-kilometer route across the Deccan Plateau and the scenic Sahyadri mountain range. Organizers expect sharp bends and significant elevation changes to test the riders' skills.
Dhoni's Message to the Indian Team
MS Dhoni expressed his enthusiasm for this new association. He stated he was happy to join the Pune Grand Tour initiative. Dhoni emphasized that this event signals India pedaling into a new chapter for cycling as a professional sport.
The former cricket captain had a special message for the Indian National Team. He reminded them that this is their moment to shine in front of home fans. Dhoni encouraged the riders to bring glory to the nation through their performance.
He also extended his best wishes to the organizers and the Pune District Administrators. Dhoni wished all participating riders great success in the competition.
International and Indian Participation
The event has attracted significant global attention. A total of 171 riders from 29 teams will participate. These athletes represent 35 different countries from around the world.
Leading the international charge is Spain's Pro Team Burgos Burpellet BH. This team holds the 27th position in the world's UCI ranking. They will be followed by China's Li Ning Star, ranked 36th globally, and Malaysia's Terengganu Cycling Team, ranked 37th.
India's Strong Representation
India will field two teams in this historic competition. The Indian National Team will be led by decorated rider Naveen John. Additionally, the country will present an Indian Development Team.
This means a total of 12 Indian riders will compete, with four substitutes ready to step in. These athletes now have a valuable opportunity to prove their mettle on home soil. They will participate in India's first-ever UCI 2.2 category competition.
Substantial Infrastructure Investment
The Pune district administration has made significant preparations for this event. Officials revealed they have spent Rs 500 crore to prepare the 437-kilometer track. This substantial investment ensures the route meets all international cycling regulations and standards.
