Mizoram's Rise in Weightlifting: A New Sporting Powerhouse

Mizoram's Sporting Transformation: Weightlifting Takes Center Stage

For decades, the northeastern state of Mizoram has been celebrated as a fertile breeding ground for football talent. This reputation is backed by impressive numbers, with over 70 players currently representing various clubs in the Indian Super League and the second-division India Football League, including prominent India international Lallianzuala Chhangte.

A New Athletic Direction Emerges

However, in recent years, a significant shift has been observed among the youth of Mizoram. Young athletes are increasingly branching out into other sports, with weightlifting emerging as a particularly strong area of focus and success.

This trend was clearly visible during the recent National Championships, where Mizoram athletes secured three bronze medals. The momentum continued at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games, where the state fielded a squad of 13 athletes—eight men and five women.

Their performance at the Tribal Games has been remarkable, yielding two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal so far, with expectations of additional podium finishes in the coming days.

The Jeremy Lalrinnunga Effect

A primary catalyst for this sporting diversification is the inspirational achievement of Jeremy Lalrinnunga. His gold medal-winning performance in the 67kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ignited a wave of enthusiasm for weightlifting across Mizoram.

"After he won the gold medal, lots of youngsters started showing interest in the sport. They were hugely motivated by his performance and I believe they can also go to the top like him," said Malsawma Khiangte, Jeremy's initial coach and current coach of the Mizoram team at the Tribal Games.

Khiangte, who trains athletes at the Khelo India Training Centre in Aizawl where 11 sportspersons are under his guidance, highlighted the growing infrastructure. The state also operates its own dedicated sports academy to nurture this newfound talent.

Government Backing and Olympic Dreams

The state government has been actively promoting this athletic shift. Lalnghinglova Hmar, Mizoram's Sports Minister, expressed great satisfaction with the team's current performance.

"We have identified eight sports disciplines with a vision for the 2036 Olympics. Weightlifting is one where we believe we have strong potential, and I’m happy to see our athletes performing well. This will give us a boost to further promote the sport," Minister Hmar stated.

Inspiring Personal Journeys

The stories of individual athletes underscore this transformation. Isak Malsawmtluanga, who clinched gold in the 60kg category with a total lift of 235kg, originally began his athletic career as a footballer. He switched to weightlifting at age 11, initially against his parents' wishes due to concerns about stunted growth, but now with their full support.

"It was at my grandmother’s request that I took up the sport. My parents weren’t too happy initially as they felt it might affect my growth, but they fully support me now," said Malsawmtluanga, who trains at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Imphal and receives guidance from his friend, Jeremy Lalrinnunga.

Another rising star, Lalfakawma, who hails from the same locality as Jeremy, was inspired by the Youth Olympic medallist and secured a silver medal at the Tribal Games.

Future Prospects and Expectations

Coach Khiangte has high hopes for 17-year-old David Zohmingnawia, who is set to compete in the +110 kg category. "He has been training in Imphal NCOE since 2024 and was part of an exposure trip to Uzbekistan. He bagged a silver in youth nationals and Khelo India Games and should be competing in the seniors within a couple of years," the coach revealed.

While it remains to be seen if Zohmingnawia will add to Mizoram's medal tally at the ongoing Tribal Games, one fact is undeniable: Mizoram is rapidly establishing itself as a formidable new force in Indian weightlifting, successfully diversifying its rich sporting heritage beyond the football field.
