Shillong witnessed a spectacular conclusion to the 4th North East Regatta 2026 on Monday, with a grand closing ceremony held at the Water Sports Complex in Umiam, also known as Barapani. This event marks a significant milestone for sailing and water sports across the country, showcasing Meghalaya's commitment to promoting aquatic activities.
Event Organization and Participation
Organized by the Yachting Association of India in collaboration with the Umiam Sailing Club and supported by the state tourism department, the regatta spanned five days of intense competitive sailing. More than 100 sailors participated, demonstrating their skills in various categories. This event followed closely on the heels of the successful 1st Indian Sailing League, which took place off the same coast last week and attracted 182 participants, including 58 international sailors from around the globe.
Significance and Impact
According to a statement from the tourism department, the North East Regatta is one of India's most prestigious sailing events. It serves as a YAI ranking event, which determines the national rankings of sailors. Additionally, the regatta acts as a crucial platform for trials to select national squads for international competitions such as the Asian Games.
Apart from the titles, a total prize pool exceeding Rs 10 lakh was awarded to winners across different categories, adding to the event's allure and competitiveness.
Commendations and Highlights
Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, Vice President of the Yachting Association of India, praised the organizers, including the Meghalaya Government, for their exceptional execution of the championship. In an official statement, he remarked, "I have seen a large number of sailing events being conducted, but no sailing event is conducted in India in this grand way." He highlighted that this regatta is the only sailing competition in the country that offers cash awards, noting its impressive affordability and seamless logistics for participants.
Standout Performances
The championship featured standout performances across various categories, with the National Sailing School leading the charge. Competitors from the Kedah Sailing Association and Malaysia Sailing Association also dominated key fleets, showcasing international talent and fostering cross-border sporting camaraderie.
This event not only celebrates athletic excellence but also positions Meghalaya as a premier destination for water sports in India, contributing to regional tourism and sports development.
