Marc Marquez Faces Contract Dilemma with Ducati Amid Health Setbacks
MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez encountered significant health challenges during the recent Buriram test in Thailand, casting a shadow over his otherwise impressive performance as the season opener approaches. The Spanish rider has not yet renewed his contract with Ducati, sparking widespread speculation that he might retire if a multi-year extension is not secured.
Injury Concerns Delay Ducati Contract Negotiations
Marc Marquez has openly discussed the reasons behind the delay in re-signing with Ducati, pointing to a persistent shoulder injury as a major factor. Speaking to media after the Buriram test, as reported by GPBlog.com, Marquez explained, "We are working on it with Ducati, but the ideal for them is two years because, if not, you are in the middle of nowhere. But at the moment, the most important thing for me was to start the preseason feeling better and better."
He emphasized that his physical condition is crucial in making any long-term commitments. "If I feel like today, where I felt a small step in my shoulder, and tomorrow another one, it will not be a problem for me to sign a two-year contract. It's my biggest limitation. It's what I learned: when you are injured, you cannot make any decisions or sign any contracts," Marquez added, highlighting the cautious approach necessitated by his recovery.
Buriram Test Marred by Crashes and Stomach Issues
Despite being one of the fastest riders on track, Marquez experienced three crashes during the Buriram MotoGP test. He attributed these incidents to a combination of stomach problems and lapses in concentration. Reflecting on the test, Marquez stated, "There were two difficult days with my physical condition. But honestly, today we did a very good job because we decided our package, our base, and I felt super good with the bike."
He acknowledged his mistakes, saying, "During the whole day, I was riding well. It's true that in the long-run simulation, I crashed, but honestly, it was my mistake. I lost concentration and missed the braking point. Apart from that, there was a crash in Turn 3. Let's stay positive because the feeling throughout the day was good, the time attack was good, and the race pace was good." Despite the setbacks, Marquez expressed excitement for the upcoming Thailand MotoGP scheduled at the Chang International Circuit from February 27 to March 1.
Fan Support Remains Strong Despite Testing Struggles
A video from Marquez's post-test media interaction was shared on MotoGP's official Instagram page, where fans flooded the comments section with messages of encouragement and faith. One fan remarked, "He's just testing the limit before the real race — typical Marc stuff on a testing day," while another affirmed, "Whatever happens, he is the world champion."
Other fans added humor and advice, with one joking, "Marc, you need to stop thinking about your Amazon delivery while doing 220 mph," and another cautioning, "Don't push too hard." This overwhelming support underscores Marquez's enduring popularity and the belief in his ability to overcome challenges.
Looking Ahead to the Thailand MotoGP
As Marquez prepares to return to the track for the Thailand MotoGP, his focus remains on improving his physical condition and securing a stable future with Ducati. The combination of injury concerns and contract uncertainties adds a layer of complexity to his preseason preparations, but his positive outlook and fan backing provide a strong foundation for the upcoming races.
