LPG Crisis Puts Nehru Stadium Hostel Canteen on Verge of Shutdown
An acute shortage of LPG cylinders has pushed the canteen at Nehru Stadium hostel in Gurgaon to the brink of closure, creating a severe disruption for young volleyball trainees who depend on it for their daily meals. The potential shutdown threatens to upend the tightly structured routines of these athletes, forcing many to consider leaving the hostel or even abandoning their training altogether.
Imminent Kitchen Closure Disrupts Training Stability
The canteen operator, Rakesh Tomar, has warned that operations may cease from Saturday due to exhausted LPG stocks. "We were anyway down to the last few cylinders. If fresh supply does not arrive soon, the kitchen cannot continue," Tomar stated. He highlighted the unsustainable cost of purchasing cylinders at inflated prices, noting that even buying one for Rs 2,000 is not feasible for ongoing operations. Tomar has formally informed the sports department about the critical situation.
This crisis leaves 25 volleyball trainees in a state of limbo, with the kitchen having run on minimal reserves for nearly a week. The trainees, who rely on the hostel for a stable living environment, face the prospect of having to vacate if the canteen shuts down. District sports officer Aarti Kohli confirmed that once a written intimation is received, the department may have to ask players to leave, exacerbating the uncertainty.
Trainees Voice Concerns Over Routine and Focus
The volleyball players expressed deep anxiety about the potential closure, emphasizing that it goes beyond mere meals to affect their entire training rhythm. Sachin, an 18-year-old from Charkhi Dadri, said, "If the kitchen stops, we will have no food here. Many of us may have to leave the hostel, which will directly affect our volleyball practice." This sentiment was echoed by others who fear that stepping out for food or relocating would break their disciplined schedules.
Parmeet, aged 17, explained, "We train for several hours every day. If we must arrange food outside or move elsewhere, our routine will be completely disrupted." Narender, a 16-year-old from Sirsa, added that the uncertainty is already impacting concentration, stating, "We want to focus on the sport, not on finding food. If the kitchen shuts, many boys will be forced to leave. That will break our rhythm." Parveen from Jhajjar summarized the growing anxiety, noting, "The hostel is meant to support our training, but without LPG, everything comes to a halt."
