Jets Cornerback Hospitalized After Early Morning Shooting
New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd, aged 29, continues to receive medical treatment at Bellevue Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound during an incident in Manhattan early Sunday morning. The professional football player was shot following an evening out with teammates that turned violent.
Night Out Turns Violent at Upscale Venue
Boyd had been socializing at a popular hotspot restaurant and lounge located on West 38th Street alongside two fellow Jets players - Jamien Sherwood, a rookie linebacker, and Irvin Charles, a wide receiver on the practice squad. The trio had been enjoying dinner and drinks at the high-end Asian-fusion establishment, known for attracting athletes and celebrities.
According to investigators, the atmosphere deteriorated when another group within the venue began "deriding the players' outfits and appearance." This verbal confrontation prompted the Jets players to exit the establishment around 2 a.m.
Altercation Escalates to Gun Violence
The conflict moved outside where surveillance footage captured a physical fight breaking out between the two groups. Critical evidence shows that approximately two shots were fired minutes before the physical altercation began, with one bullet striking Boyd in the stomach.
Police confirmed that neither Sherwood nor Charles sustained injuries during the incident. Investigators have stated there is no indication that either Jets player was armed or discharged a weapon during the confrontation.
Ongoing Investigation and Team Response
The New York Police Department continues to review surveillance footage and interview witnesses as they work to identify the shooter. Authorities reported that a luxury sedan was seen following the players' vehicle before both cars fled the scene at high speed.
Investigators have released images of a high-end SUV with Michigan license plates that may be connected to the shooting. They believe the armed assailant might have been inside one of these vehicles.
The restaurant management issued a statement clarifying that the incident occurred after closing hours and outside their premises, emphasizing their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The New York Jets organization acknowledged the situation with a brief statement while declining further comment. Several players have publicly expressed support for Boyd, asking fans to keep the injured cornerback in their thoughts during his recovery.
Boyd, who has been on injured reserve this season due to a shoulder issue, joined the Jets in March 2025 after previous stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans.
