In a candid and revealing interview, Jemimah Rodrigues, the dynamic captain of the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), has opened up about the multifaceted challenges of being a professional cricketer. She emphasizes the importance of managing menstrual health, maintaining peak fitness, and navigating the intense mental pressures that come with the sport.
Managing Menstrual Health in Professional Sports
Rodrigues admits that early in her career, menstrual cramps, fatigue, and discomfort often made training sessions more difficult. "There have definitely been days when cramps, fatigue, or just the discomfort that comes with periods made training harder, and I had to listen to my body," she shared. She notes that there was initially more hesitation in speaking up about these issues, but over time, she has learned to prioritize her health without added stress.
She highlights the need for open conversations about menstruation, especially in sports. "Periods shouldn’t be accompanied by fear, embarrassment, or unnecessary rules. The more openly we talk about them, the easier it becomes for girls to feel confident and supported," Rodrigues stated. She advocates for discussions to start earlier in homes and schools to normalize this natural process.
Fitness and Diet: A Balanced Approach
As a professional cricketer, fitness is integral to Rodrigues’s routine. She balances skill sessions with fitness work, including strength training, conditioning, running, and gym workouts. "I usually balance skill sessions with fitness work. Some days focus more on strength, conditioning, running, and gym sessions, while other days are centred around batting, fielding, and match simulations," she explained.
Her diet is equally balanced, focusing on proteins, vegetables, and carbs to fuel training and recovery. Breakfast often includes fruits, smoothies, or green juices, while lunch and dinner are hearty meals. Rodrigues believes in enjoying food without strict restrictions, incorporating treats like Mumbai street food to maintain a healthy relationship with eating.
The Mental Challenges of Professional Cricket
Rodrigues identifies the mental side of the game as the most challenging aspect. "For me, the most challenging part is managing the mental side of the game. Pressure, expectations, inconsistency; a lot of the toughest battles happen in your own head," she said. "What’s helped me most is being honest about how I feel and leaning on the people around me," Rodrigues noted. Rest days are crucial for Rodrigues, particularly before important matches. She focuses on good sleep, proper nutrition, and listening to her body to ensure she feels fresh and energized. "I truly believe the body isn’t a machine — if you’ve put in the work, you also need to allow yourself to recover so you can show up with energy and clarity," she emphasized.
