Jake Paul is no longer speaking with the same confidence that once defined his rise in boxing. Nearly five months after suffering a devastating knockout loss to Anthony Joshua, the YouTuber-turned-fighter is now facing something far more difficult than criticism or internet backlash. He is confronting the possibility that his boxing career may already be over.
Injury Changed Everything
Paul's jaw was broken in two places during the sixth round of his December fight against Joshua in Miami, forcing multiple surgeries and months of recovery. While promoting Most Valuable Promotions' upcoming Netflix MMA card headlined by Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, Paul opened up in unusually honest fashion about the uncertainty hanging over his future.
Jake Paul Makes Candid Admission on Potential Retirement
Paul admitted the next few medical evaluations could decide whether he ever fights again.
"We'll see what my doctors say," he said during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show. "I'll be able to get a more accurate timeframe, or can I even fight again? That is definitely in the realm and possibilities of things (that I can't)."
Paul acknowledged that retirement has crossed his mind as the recovery process continues to drag on longer than expected. "Most definitely," Paul admitted, adding, "It just depends on how the bone heals."
What Happened to Jake Paul?
Joshua's finish was brutal. A crushing right-left combination in Round 6 ended the fight and left Paul requiring immediate surgery. According to reports, titanium plates and screws were placed on both sides of his jaw after fractures developed in two separate areas.
The recovery has not been smooth. Paul revealed that another surgery became necessary after the hardware loosened during rehab. He also confirmed that one of his back teeth was lost because of the damage.
"There's a tooth missing (in the back). I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get an implanted tooth of some sort," Paul explained.
The defeat itself was already a major setback. Before losing to Joshua, Paul had won 12 professional fights and built momentum with high-profile events, including his 2024 victory over Mike Tyson in Texas.
Jake Paul Addresses Recovery and Return Timeline
Despite the uncertainty, Paul insists he is not emotionally ready to walk away from boxing.
"Those (doubts) have come up, but I'm not done," he said. "I can just feel it in my spirit and my soul, and my heart that I have more fights left and unfinished business in my mind."
For now, everything depends on upcoming scans and medical clearance. Paul has resumed light training activities, but full sparring remains off limits until doctors are convinced the jaw can handle contact again.
At 29 years old, he still believes another chapter exists. The problem is nobody, including Paul himself, knows yet whether his body will allow it.
