Jaelin Kauf Leads Historic U.S. Podium Sweep at World Cup Dual Moguls in Japan

In a stunning display of dominance, Jaelin Kauf spearheaded a complete United States podium sweep at the World Cup dual moguls event held on Sunday in Nanto-Toyama, Japan. The three-time Olympic medalist showcased her exceptional skill by defeating teammate Olivia Giaccio with a decisive 20-15 score in the final round. Tess Johnson secured the third-place position, ensuring an all-American finish on the podium for this prestigious competition, which recently made its Olympic debut.

Kauf's Emotional Victory in Challenging Conditions

The victory at Taira Ski Area marked another powerful performance for the U.S. women's moguls team this season. Kauf, a double silver medalist from the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, leveraged her vast experience to navigate the tough snow conditions effectively. This win was particularly emotional and historic for Kauf, as it occurred in Japan, nearly a decade after she claimed her first-ever World Cup victory in Tazawako.

Reflecting on the intense final duel, Kauf described it as a dramatic battle. "It was a dramatic battle with Olivia, and I focused on staying composed and preventing mistakes," she explained. "I launched into the bottom jump quickly and was unsure of Giaccio's position, so my only aim was to stay upright and reach the finish line safely." Both skiers faced challenges, losing their lines between the first and second jumps, but Kauf managed to maintain a slight edge throughout the race.

Team Success and Future Aspirations

Kauf expressed immense joy at competing again in Japan, praising the enthusiastic crowd and highlighting the special moment of sharing the podium with her American teammates. "The crowd was amazing, and it was special to share another podium with my teammates," she said. She also voiced hope that the team could achieve another sweep in the final duals event of the season, underscoring their collective ambition and camaraderie.

This event marks the second time this season that the U.S. women have swept the dual moguls podium. Previously, Kauf led a similar sweep in Val St Côme in January, alongside Elizabeth Lemley and Tess Johnson. Notably, Lemley, the Olympic moguls champion, did not participate in the Japan event, making this latest achievement even more impressive for the team.

Men's Event Highlights and Season Conclusion

In the men's competition, Japan's Ikuma Horishima delighted the home crowd by securing victory despite a chaotic final run. Horishima shared his disbelief at winning, stating, "Reaching the finish and realizing I had won felt unbelievable. I wanted a clean run but was delighted to finish first." He credited the crowd's cheers at the start gate for providing extra strength and expressed pride in leading Japan's rising moguls team.

The World Cup season is set to conclude with its finale in Shahdag, Azerbaijan, on March 14-15. Kauf aims to carry her winning momentum into this final event, as the moguls World Cup moves forward. This performance not only solidifies Kauf's status as a top contender but also highlights the United States' growing prowess in winter sports, setting the stage for future competitions.
