Top Indian Volleyball Stars Set for 2nd All Goa Tournament in Merces
The 2nd All Goa volleyball tournament, organized by Gladstone Almeida in collaboration with Pogo Boys, is set to commence at Modi ground in Merces from Tuesday. This five-day event promises high-intensity competition, with some of India's premier volleyball players anticipated to participate, elevating the tournament's prestige and excitement.
National Talent and Competitive Format
Six teams from Goa will vie for top honors in this tournament, which has been designed to showcase elite talent. According to competition rules, each team must include three outstation players, a stipulation that has led to teams reaching out to stars from the Prime Volleyball League (PVL). Notable names being discussed include Shubham Choudhary and Kiran Raj, though organizers have noted that teams are keeping their outstation rosters under wraps to prevent player poaching.
Gladstone Almeida, the organizer, shared his vision for the event, stating, "Last year, we held this all-Goa tournament in Santa Barbara ward (Santa Cruz) and decided to elevate it by inviting national players this time." He added, "I am confident that the competition will be fierce with top volleyball athletes on board." The tournament is being held in memory of his father, Vicente Almeida, and brother, Bonifacio Almeida, adding a personal touch to the sporting spectacle.
Team Groupings and Venue Details
The six participating teams have been divided into two groups to ensure balanced and thrilling matches. Group A consists of Detailz Doctor (Menkure), Cacra-Aradi-Bandh (Santa Cruz), and KK Boys (Santa Cruz). Group B includes Radhakrisna (Usgao), Sarvan (Bicholim), and Varad 7. To accommodate the expected large turnout, Pogo Boys have developed a special volleyball court at Merces with a seating capacity exceeding 3,000, ensuring fans can enjoy the action in comfort.
Prize Money and Schedule
Significant cash prizes are up for grabs, motivating teams to perform at their best. The winners will receive Rs 1 lakh, while the runners-up will be awarded Rs 70,000. Additionally, semifinal losers will each earn Rs 25,000, recognizing their efforts in reaching the advanced stages of the tournament.
