Indian Rally Champion and Arjuna Awardee Sailor Missing in Maldives Speedboat Mishap
There is escalating concern and anxiety within Indian sporting circles as two prominent athletes remain missing nearly five days after a tragic speedboat accident in the Maldives. Chandigarh's celebrated rally driver Hari Singh, aged 59, and former Indian Navy Commander Mahesh Ramachandran, an Arjuna awardee in sailing, have not been located since the incident occurred on the night of March 19.
Details of the Accident and Ongoing Search Operations
The speedboat was carrying seven individuals, including Gautam Singhania, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Raymond Group, along with four other passengers. While Singhania and the other four were successfully rescued following the mishap, Hari Singh and Commander Ramachandran have yet to be found. The Maldives authorities have been conducting intensive search and rescue operations in the area where the accident took place.
Shashi Pal Singh Garcha, a former national motocross champion and president of the Chandigarh Motorsports Association, who is a long-time friend of Hari Singh, provided an update on the recovery efforts. "No luck so far. Search is on, full swing," Garcha stated. "Hari's close friend, who reached there on hearing the news, has met one of the senior commanders supervising the search operations. They will continue till the day after as of now."

"The sailing community in India has been in a state of shock ever since it learnt that Cdr Mahesh Ramachandran, one of the stalwarts of the sport, has been missing at sea," Tomy posted. "The sailing community is holding on to every bit of hope that Cdr Mahesh and Hari Singh are rescued at the earliest."
Former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, also offered his condolences, acknowledging Hari Singh's pioneering contributions to Indian motorsport. "Saddened to hear of the sudden and tragic passing of two Indian nationals in an accident, including Hari Singh, a true pioneer of Indian motorsport," Nasheed posted on X, extending sincere condolences to the families and communities affected.
