Indian Men's Basketball Team Safely Returns After 10-Day Stranding in Doha
The Indian men's basketball team has finally returned home after being stranded in Doha, Qatar, for 10 days due to geopolitical tensions disrupting air travel. The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) confirmed the team's safe return on Tuesday, following a challenging ordeal during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.
Geopolitical Tensions Cause Travel Disruption
The team traveled to Doha for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, but ongoing regional conflicts and tensions severely impacted international airspace and flight operations. This left the entire contingent temporarily stranded in the Qatari capital, unable to secure immediate flights back to India.
The Qatar Basketball Federation provided crucial support, offering hotel accommodation and logistical assistance to ensure the safety and security of all players and staff members. This support was maintained until the Embassy of India could arrange for their safe return journey.
Complex Return Journey via Saudi Arabia
On March 8, 2026, the team embarked on a complex return journey that involved multiple transportation modes. The delegation first traveled by road from Doha to Dammam in Saudi Arabia, a necessary detour due to limited flight availability from Qatar directly to India.
Due to these constraints, the team had to split into two groups for their return flights:
- The first group flew via the Dammam-Jeddah-Mumbai route, successfully landing in Mumbai at 12:05 AM
- The second group took a direct flight from Dammam to Lucknow, arriving at 5:15 AM
Coordinated Efforts for Safe Return
The Basketball Federation of India maintained constant communication throughout the crisis. BFI president and secretary general worked closely with multiple organizations to ensure the team's safe return, including:
- The FIBA Asia office for international coordination
- The Government of India for diplomatic support
- The Indian Embassy in Doha for on-ground assistance
"The safety and well-being of the players remained the highest priority throughout this challenging situation," emphasized the BFI in their official statement.
Gratitude for International Support
The Basketball Federation of India expressed profound gratitude to all organizations that assisted during the crisis. In their statement, they specifically thanked:
- FIBA Asia for their coordination efforts
- The Qatar Basketball Federation for providing accommodation and support
- The Indian embassies in Doha and Saudi Arabia for diplomatic assistance
"We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their invaluable support and assistance during these challenging times," the BFI statement concluded, acknowledging the collaborative efforts that ensured the team's safe return despite significant travel disruptions caused by regional geopolitical tensions.
