The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) is set to host its first-ever FIDE-rated Open Chess Championship this Saturday, drawing a remarkable 384 chess players from across India. The prestigious tournament, organized by the IIT Chess Club, boasts a substantial prize pool of Rs 2 lakh, highlighting the growing prominence of chess in academic and competitive circles.

Diverse Participation from Elite Players

According to Dilip Srivastava, Secretary of the Kanpur Chess Association, the championship will feature a diverse lineup of 95 women and 289 men players. The roster includes two International Masters (IMs), one FIDE Master, three AGMs, two CMs, two AIMs, three ACMs, and five AFMs, showcasing a high level of competitive talent. This mix of seasoned professionals and emerging players underscores the event's appeal and significance in the Indian chess community.

Tournament Format and Prize Distribution

The championship will consist of nine intense rounds, each played with a time control of 12 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move, ensuring a fast-paced and strategic battle.
