Panaji: Goan athletes continued their impressive run on the final day to clinch the team championship at the 3rd National Women Masters Athletics Championship, held at the Athletics Stadium in Santa Cruz on Sunday. The event was organized by the Goa Masters Athletic Association.
Goa's Medal Tally
Goa's athletes amassed a total of 74 medals, comprising 29 gold, 25 silver, and 20 bronze medals. This tally surpassed the performance of a strong Maharashtra team, which finished second with 53 medals, including 27 gold, 14 silver, and 12 bronze. Tamil Nadu secured the third position with 66 medals.
Key Performers for Goa
Goa's rise to the top was fueled by four athletes who won gold medals in all three individual events they participated in. On the first day, Betty Sebastian D'Silva (60+ age category) won three gold medals. She was followed by Devi Gaonkar (50+), who excelled in discus throw, javelin throw, and shot put. Melida Pereira (75+) triumphed in the 100m, 200m, and 400m runs. The oldest participant, Maria Imelda de Sousa (90+), claimed gold in shot put, 100m, and javelin throw.
Ritinha Pereira also secured three individual medals for Goa. The former footballer won gold in high jump and triple jump but settled for silver in long jump, missing a hat-trick of golds. Three Goan athletes—Devi Gaonkar, Betty D'Silva, and Maria Imelda de Sousa—were adjudged individual champions in their respective age groups.
