Goa's Mopa Circuit Poised for Major Motorsports Upgrade

Even before the engines roared for Round 4 of the Indian Racing Festival at Manohar International Airport in Mopa, Pernem, on Sunday, organizers delivered exciting news. They announced plans for another round in October and revealed discussions to potentially upgrade the competition from Formula 4 to the more advanced Formula 3 category later this year.

Organizers Seek FIA Approval for Formula 3 Ambitions

Akhilesh Reddy, chairman and managing director of Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd, confirmed the developments. "We are actually in discussions with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, the governing body for motorsports) and have sought permission to do a four-round competition because it will be the year one for Formula 3," Reddy told TOI. "We are still in the process. Probably in a month or two, we would get the complete update."

Racing Promotions, which launched the Indian Racing Festival and holds the rights to introduce F3 in India, has seen the festival grow steadily. The fourth edition marked a significant milestone with the debut of the Goa street circuit at Mopa, adding a new venue to its expanding portfolio.

Successful Debut for Goa Street Circuit

Reflecting on the event, Reddy noted, "The experience of a street circuit in Goa for the first time has been good. Lots of hardships, lots of back-end things because of time constraints, but overall, we had a successful event. The round four finished successfully." The round concluded with victory for Goa Aces JA Racing, owned by Bollywood actor John Abraham.

The event was attended by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who highlighted the state's commitment. He confirmed that the Goa government and GMR, operators of Manohar International Airport, have entered into a three-year agreement with the organizers to host the races. "Racing Promotions, along with GMR, are free to bring other car races to Goa on their own," said Sawant. "We will provide the necessary support. We need such big international events. We should be proud that Goa is hosting major international sporting events."

Stepping Stones in Motorsports: From Formula 4 to Formula 3

Formula 4 serves as an open-wheel racing series designed for junior drivers, acting as a crucial stepping stone from karting towards the elite Formula One. Formula 3 represents a higher tier, offering the first international platform on the path to F1 glory.

Chief Minister Sawant elaborated on the strategic vision, stating, "Should the (Union) govt decide to bring Formula 1 to India, we would like to be in the reckoning as hosts. Goa has hosted this Formula 4 race because Formula 1 destinations are not created overnight. Through these events we can steadily climb up. Hosting Formula 4 allows destinations to demonstrate its capability without the scale and cost of Formula 1."

He emphasized the broader economic impact, adding, "Motorsports should be treated as something that can develop a destination and its economic structure. There are approximately 24 cities worldwide that hosts Formula 1 racing. Their govt is spending approximately more than Rs 800 to 1200 crores annually to host this type of single race. That’s because of economics, the tourism returns are multiple times."

This announcement signals a significant boost for motorsports in India, with Goa positioning itself as a key hub for international racing events, potentially paving the way for higher-tier competitions in the future.
