Gavaskar meets Assam CM, proposes marathon event

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday and proposed organizing a marathon event in the state inspired by the Tokyo Marathon. The meeting focused on leveraging sports to promote tourism and healthy living in Assam.

Gavaskar's Proposal for Assam

Gavaskar, a former Indian cricket captain, suggested that Assam could host a world-class marathon similar to the Tokyo Marathon, which attracts thousands of participants globally. He emphasized that such an event would not only encourage fitness but also put Assam on the global sports tourism map.

During the discussion, Gavaskar highlighted the scenic beauty of Assam, including its tea gardens and Brahmaputra river, as ideal backdrops for a marathon. He noted that the Tokyo Marathon generates significant economic benefits for Japan and that Assam could replicate this model.

CM Himanta's Response

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the proposal and assured Gavaskar of the state government's support. Sarma stated that Assam is keen to develop sports infrastructure and host international events. He added that the government would study the feasibility of organizing a marathon of international standards.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, Sarma said, “Assam has immense potential for sports tourism. We are grateful to Sunil Gavaskar for his valuable suggestion and will work towards making it a reality.” The meeting also touched upon other sports development initiatives in the state.

Impact on Sports Tourism

If implemented, the Assam Marathon could attract elite runners and tourists from around the world, boosting local businesses and creating jobs. The Tokyo Marathon, for instance, has over 38,000 participants and generates millions of dollars in revenue annually. Assam's marathon could similarly position the state as a destination for sports events.

Gavaskar's visit to Assam is part of his broader engagement with regional governments to promote sports. He has previously advocated for using sports as a tool for social change and economic growth.
