The vibrant sounds of clashing Gatka sticks echoed in Mohali as the prestigious 9th National Senior Gatka Championship–2025 was officially inaugurated on Sunday. The national-level tournament, popularly known as the Gatka Cup, is being held at the historic Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib in New Chandigarh (Mohali) and will run until December 30.
A Gathering of Warriors from Across India
Organised by the Gatka Federation of India (GFI), the championship has successfully drawn participants from a wide geographical spectrum. Players from more than 20 Indian states have converged in Mohali to compete in this three-day martial arts spectacle, showcasing the sport's growing national appeal.
The inaugural ceremony saw Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh grace the event as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasised the collective duty to safeguard indigenous sports. "Preserving and promoting our heritage-related sports is our collective moral responsibility," Singh stated. He further elaborated that traditional disciplines like Gatka can only thrive when society actively creates opportunities to learn, watch, and organise such events.
Honouring Heritage and Martyrs
This year's championship carries profound historical significance, as it has been dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. The event thus serves not only as a sporting competition but also as a tribute to valour and sacrifice.
Applauding the organisers, MLA Kulwant Singh noted that such tournaments are crucial for connecting the youth with their cultural roots, history, and heritage. He was encouraged by the large turnout of spectators, which he said reflects sustained public interest in traditional games.
Government Support and Commendable Arrangements
Singh also highlighted the Punjab government's focus on sports promotion under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. He mentioned that steps are being taken to support athletes and foster a conducive environment for sporting activities across the state. The MLA additionally pointed to various welfare schemes related to health, employment, and public welfare being implemented at the grassroots level.
He specifically praised the excellent arrangements made for the visiting athletes. The Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib Trust, under the supervision of Baba Lakhbir Singh, has taken full responsibility for the accommodation and meals of all participating players, an effort described as highly commendable.
On the inaugural day, the MLA distributed prizes and certificates to players, recognising their dedication. The ceremony was attended by key figures including Baba Lakhbir Singh, Chairman of the Vishwa Gurmat Ruhani Charitable Trust, and Rajinder Singh Sohal, Active President of the Gatka Federation of India, along with office-bearers of the Gatka Association, players, and numerous sports enthusiasts.
The Gatka Cup 2025 promises three days of intense competition, spiritual remembrance, and a celebration of India's rich martial tradition, putting Mohali at the centre of the nation's traditional sports landscape.
