NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman Hints at Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews Trade Decision
As trade rumors surrounding star center Auston Matthews have dominated headlines and gained significant traction in recent weeks, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has dropped a major hint about the Toronto Maple Leafs' looming offseason trade decision. The speculation has intensified dramatically following the club's recent organizational shake-up, which included the dismissal of General Manager Brad Treliving and uncertainty surrounding head coach Craig Berube's future with the team.
Potential Trade Fits and Injury Update
Earlier reports from NHL insider Darren Dreger indicated that top NHL teams like the San Jose Sharks and the Utah Mammoth have emerged as potential trade destinations for Matthews, should the Maple Leafs' captain decide to seek a move. This comes as Matthews is currently in recovery from a serious knee injury sustained during the season.
The 26-year-old forward suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion during a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas. Prior to this injury, Matthews had compiled an impressive 53 points (27 goals, 26 assists) in 77 games for the Maple Leafs, who finished the 2025-26 campaign with a disappointing 32-31-14 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Friedman's Theory on Matthews' Future
Elliotte Friedman has suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs are heading toward a potentially transformative offseason, with significant roster and organizational changes expected following their disappointing season. Speaking on his April 3 episode of 32 Thoughts, Friedman revealed his theory about how the team might handle Matthews' situation.
"This is my theory, it's purely my theory based on what I heard this week, is they're gonna tell him, 'We're back on track next year or trying to be, and come back at the start of the year, and let's see how it goes,'" Friedman stated. He emphasized that Matthews' future with the Maple Leafs is not fully decided and could depend heavily on how the team performs at the beginning of the next season.
The Quinn Hughes Precedent
Friedman pointed to the recent example of the Vancouver Canucks' handling of Quinn Hughes as a potential blueprint for how Toronto might approach the Matthews situation. The Canucks waited to evaluate their season before ultimately trading Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in early December, a move that signaled the beginning of a rebuild after their season began to deteriorate.
"Like, I think the Quinn Hughes thing, every player in that league, every team in that league saw how the Quinn Hughes thing played out this year," Friedman explained. "And that is that you start the year, you see how it goes, and then if it goes off the rails, you adjust as necessary. We'll see. I could be wrong about that. But that's my theory right now."
Contract Details and Control Factors
It's important to note that Auston Matthews remains under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs through the 2027-28 season, having signed a four-year deal. However, his contract includes a full no-movement clause, which gives him complete control over any potential trade. This means Matthews cannot be moved without his explicit consent, putting significant leverage in the hands of the star player as trade discussions potentially unfold.
The combination of organizational changes, Matthews' injury recovery, and the team's disappointing season has created a perfect storm of speculation about one of hockey's biggest stars potentially changing teams. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Toronto's front office decisions and how they navigate this critical period for the franchise's future direction.
