Florida Shooting Near The Players Championship Leaves Two Dead, Suspect Apprehended
A late-night shooting near the prestigious Players Championship golf tournament in Florida has left two people dead and triggered a massive police manhunt that briefly disrupted the event. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Walgreens store close to TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, where the PGA Tour competition was underway.
Violent Incident Unfolds Near Tournament Grounds
According to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick, the shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night. Investigators have identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, a 32-year-old man with what authorities describe as an extensive criminal history. The shooting appears to have stemmed from a domestic violence situation, with Barrios allegedly shooting two victims multiple times during the confrontation.
Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to their injuries. Officials have not yet released the names of the deceased as next of kin notifications are still pending. The proximity of the violence to the tournament venue immediately raised concerns among law enforcement and tournament organizers.
Manhunt Extends to Golf Course Property
After the shooting, Barrios fled the scene and moved toward the TPC Sawgrass golf course property, prompting a large-scale search operation across Northeast Florida. Although the incident did not occur directly on the tournament grounds, the suspect's movement toward the prestigious golf facility created significant security concerns early Saturday morning.
Sheriff Hardwick revealed that police dogs tracked Barrios' trail after the shooting and followed his path toward the golf course. "We know he made contact with some employees in there," Hardwick told reporters during a press briefing. Investigators believe Barrios picked up a PGA Tour radio during his escape attempt, which he later discarded.
"He picked up what we believe was a radio that belonged to the PGA Tour," Hardwick explained. "It was not one of our radios. We know he dropped it later and our canines used it as a scent when they came in there."
Police Chase and Arrest
Authorities say Barrios then stole a black BMW and drove north from the scene. Police in Nassau County began pursuing the vehicle approximately an hour north of the tournament site. Officers eventually forced the car off the road, where it crashed into wooded terrain.
Barrios attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody Saturday morning. The arrest concluded an intensive overnight search operation that involved multiple law enforcement agencies working collaboratively to locate the dangerous suspect.
Suspect's Troubled Criminal History
Sheriff Hardwick expressed frustration with Barrios' extensive criminal background during the press conference. The suspect has 27 previous arrests on his record, according to law enforcement officials. Hardwick revealed that Barrios knew both victims involved in the shooting.
"His criminal history is embarrassing. It makes me sick to my stomach," Hardwick stated emphatically. "[Barrios] is out of prison again on probation, committing another violent felony."
Police records indicate Barrios had been arrested in 2023 for an alleged vehicle theft. Authorities noted that the suspect's mother cooperated with investigators during the search operation, providing valuable assistance to law enforcement.
Tournament Impact and Security Response
While no players, staff, or spectators at The Players Championship were physically harmed during the incident, the shooting and subsequent manhunt did affect tournament operations. Officials delayed opening spectator gates for Saturday's third round of play, citing "operational considerations" related to the ongoing police activity in the area.
The golf competition itself began on schedule at 8:15 a.m., but hospitality areas and certain spectator zones opened later at 11 a.m. Tournament organizers worked closely with law enforcement to ensure appropriate security measures were in place as the championship proceeded under normal conditions following the morning disruptions.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting while the PGA Tour event continues with enhanced security protocols. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what is typically one of golf's most celebrated tournaments, raising questions about public safety at major sporting events.
Law enforcement officials have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to tournament participants or attendees, but the investigation remains active as they work to piece together the complete sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting near one of golf's most iconic venues.
