Lucas Di Grassi Contemplates Future in Formula E Amid Challenging Season
Lucas Di Grassi, a stalwart of the Formula E championship, is currently competing in his 12th season with undiminished enthusiasm. The 41-year-old Brazilian driver, racing for Lola Yamaha ABT, has been part of the all-electric series since its inception in 2014. However, amid a difficult performance this year, he has openly raised doubts about whether he will continue racing next season.
Struggling Performance and Retirement Considerations
Di Grassi's current campaign has been tough, with no points scored after five races, leaving him at the bottom of the Drivers' Standings. This follows a challenging previous season, though he did secure a podium finish in Miami. In an interview with RacingNews365, he addressed his future, stating, "Right now, I have to drive as if I'm going to be driving forever. I have to commit myself fully, so I'll decide later on whether I continue or not."
He elaborated on his thought process, adding, "But in a nutshell, at this point in my career, I need to understand where I'm more valuable. Am I more valuable driving the car? Am I more valuable doing something else for the championship or for the team? If not next year, then in a few years, I want to take the step toward that. So for me, I need to understand the opportunities where I think I can add more value and then make the decision. So it's not 100% clear that I'll be on the grid next season."
Despite these uncertainties, Di Grassi remains focused on his current duties, particularly in developing the GEN4 car. He emphasized, "But at the moment, with the development of Gen4 and Gen3, I have to try to push as much as I can, because I still need to deliver results for the team."
Pivotal Role in Formula E's History
Lucas Di Grassi has been instrumental in Formula E's growth and success. His contributions include:
- Lending his technological expertise to develop the series' first electric race car.
- Serving as the official test driver for the Formula E prototype car, Formulec.
- Joining Audi Sport ABT for the inaugural 2014-15 season and racing with them until 2021.
- Winning the 2016-2017 Formula E World Championship.
After his tenure with Audi, Di Grassi moved to ROCKIT Venturi Racing in 2022, then switched to Mahindra Racing in 2023. He returned to Lola Yamaha ABT in 2024, where he currently races alongside teammate Zane Maloney. The team is working to improve its on-track performance, but results have been elusive so far.
As Di Grassi navigates this pivotal moment in his career, his legacy in Formula E remains significant, marked by both championship success and foundational contributions to the sport's electric technology.
