Desert Rally Turns Nightmare as Locust Swarms Engulf Vehicles

Rally Adventure Turns Into Locust Apocalypse in Sahara Desert

What began as an exciting desert rally adventure quickly transformed into a scene straight from a disaster film. On February 24, near Boujdour in Western Sahara, participants in the Budapest–Bamako Rally encountered an unexpected and overwhelming obstacle: enormous swarms of desert locusts that engulfed their vehicles in a relentless assault.

Video Captures Chaotic Locust Encounter

A now-viral video captured by driver Salah Abdelhadi shows the terrifying moment when rally vehicles ploughed through thick clouds of insects. The footage reveals windshields completely splattered with locust remains and skies darkened by thousands of fluttering wings as drivers maintained their speed through what appeared to be a moving wall of insects.

"We went through a few intense locust swarms and happened to catch the worst one on my camera," Abdelhadi explained, describing the most chaotic segment of the drive. "Within seconds, our visibility was completely compromised by this relentless, fluttering assault."

Official Rally Account Confirms Unprecedented Event

The official Budapest–Bamako Rally Instagram page acknowledged the surreal occurrence, stating: "As we crossed the Sahara from Tadachacht to Bojdour, teams encountered massive swarms of locusts along the way. Swarms of this size haven't appeared in the region for the past 20 years! As the motto of the Budapest Bamako goes, 'Expect the unexpected.'"

This confirmation highlights the extraordinary nature of the event, with meteorological experts noting that such dense locust concentrations represent a significant environmental anomaly for the region.

Nature's Hazardous Obstacle Course

Desert locust swarms are notorious for their:

  • Sheer density that can darken skies
  • Unpredictable movement patterns across vast distances
  • Devastating agricultural impact on crops and vegetation

For rally participants, however, the phenomenon presented an immediate physical hazard—a crunchy, winged obstacle course unfolding at highway speeds that tested both vehicle integrity and driver nerve.

Social Media Erupts With Apocalyptic Comparisons

On social media platforms, the viral footage sparked widespread reaction:

  1. Memes comparing the drive to post-apocalyptic road sagas
  2. Users quipping about farmers "crying in advance" at the agricultural devastation
  3. Personal anecdotes about childhood experiences with locusts
  4. Scientific discussions about climate factors contributing to swarm formation

The event has drawn attention not just to rally challenges but to broader environmental patterns in desert regions, with experts monitoring whether this represents an isolated incident or a concerning trend in locust population dynamics.
