According to Gaston County Emergency Management & Fire Services, a fire erupted on December 28 in a bedroom at the home Hamlin had purchased for his parents in Gaston County, North Carolina. Officials reported that the exact cause remains undetermined. Both Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin were discovered outside the residence with critical injuries. A neighbor recounted that Mary Lou heroically pulled Dennis from the house. Tragically, he later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while she survived after being in critical condition.
In an emotional interview with Fox Sports prior to the Daytona 500, Hamlin described the heart-wrenching moment he received the phone call about the fire. “I got a call from my sister that said the parents’ house is on fire, the whole house is gone,” he shared. “My mom took him from the bedroom to outside in the front yard. I was just driving so fast to try to get there and they said they had already been taken to the hospital.” Hamlin added that the reality of the loss struck him when he saw his father afterward. “What made it real was seeing my dad. I saw him lying there after he had passed, I just knew that it was real in that moment,” he reflected.
