Jharkhand Greenlights Major Cycling Centre of Excellence in Ranchi
In a significant development for sports infrastructure in eastern India, officials have confirmed that all necessary approvals are now in place for establishing a dedicated centre of excellence for cycling in Jharkhand's capital, Ranchi. The facility will be located within the expansive velodrome complex at Khelgaon in Hotwar, marking a long-awaited utilization of this sporting asset.
Official Approval and Funding Structure
Shailendra Pathak, Secretary of the Jharkhand Cycling Association, provided detailed insights into the project's status. "The Sports Authority of India has formally approved the initiative under the Khelo India programme," Pathak stated. "We are collaborating closely with the state sports department, and preliminary groundwork has already commenced to ensure a swift rollout."
Regarding financial arrangements, Pathak clarified that the funding for this ambitious centre will be shared through a partnership between the central government and the Jharkhand state government. This collaborative funding model underscores the project's importance in the national sports development landscape.
Addressing a Critical Gap in Sports Infrastructure
Pathak emphasized the transformative potential of this facility for local athletes. "For years, promising cyclists from Jharkhand have been forced to seek training at centres of excellence in other states, often at their own personal expense," he explained. "This has created an unnecessary barrier for talent from tribal and rural communities. The government has now recognized this gap and is prioritizing the establishment of a proper cycling hub within our state."
He noted that Jharkhand cyclists have shown remarkable promise, with several athletes consistently earning selection for national teams in recent years. The new centre is expected to significantly boost these prospects by providing world-class training facilities locally.
Coaching Staff and Operational Details
The operational blueprint for the centre includes a structured coaching team. "Our plan involves appointing three specialized coaches," Pathak detailed. "The head coach position will be filled by the Sports Authority of India, while the state sports department will be responsible for selecting the remaining two coaches. The recruitment process for these positions is currently underway at the departmental level."
Reviving an Underutilized Sporting Venue
The Hotwar velodrome itself has a complex history. Constructed as part of the infrastructure for the 2011 National Games hosted in Ranchi, this multi-crore facility has remained largely underutilized due to various administrative and logistical challenges. A previous attempt to launch a residential cycling centre around 2013-14 failed to materialize, making the current approval particularly noteworthy.
An anonymous state official revealed specific details about the centre's residential nature. "The facility is designed to accommodate 30 young athletes," the official shared. "This will include 15 boys and 15 girls, primarily in the age groups of 12 to 15 years. Beyond intensive cycling training, the centre will also facilitate the athletes' formal education, creating a holistic development environment."
Expanding Jharkhand's Sports Ecosystem
This new cycling centre will join Jharkhand's existing network of nine centres of excellence across six different sports disciplines. Currently, the state sports department operates facilities for:
- Archery in Ranchi and Dumka
- Football in Ranchi
- Hockey in Ranchi, Khunti (boys only), and Simdega
- Wrestling in Ranchi
- Badminton in Ranchi
- Athletics in Bokaro
The addition of a dedicated cycling centre represents a strategic expansion of this sports infrastructure, particularly aimed at nurturing talent from Jharkhand's tribal heartland. Efforts to contact Asif Ekram, the state's Director of Art and Culture who currently oversees the sports department, for additional comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
