Chandigarh Gears Up for High-Flying Aerobatic Spectacle This Weekend
The city of Chandigarh is poised for an exhilarating aerial extravaganza as the Indian Air Force's renowned Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team takes to the skies over Sukhna Lake this weekend. The landmark civil air display, scheduled for March 27 and 28, promises to deliver a breathtaking showcase of precision flying and high-speed manoeuvres, marking a rare event for the tricity region.
Governor Kataria to Grace Event as Chief Guest
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria will serve as the chief guest on March 28, having been personally invited by Air Commodore Deepak Pant, AOC of Air Force Station, Chandigarh. The event's significance extends beyond Chandigarh, with invitations extended to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Cabinet Ministers and Assembly Speakers from both states, highlighting its regional importance.
Event Details and Timings
The aerobatic displays are set to occur between 10 am and 11.30 am on both days, with the March 28 show commencing at 10.40 AM. Against the stunning backdrop of Sukhna Lake, the Surya Kiran team will execute their signature formations, offering spectators a visual treat. With this show, Chandigarh joins a select group of Indian cities to host such a dedicated civilian aerobatic display, making it a must-watch occasion.
Comprehensive Traffic Advisory Issued
In preparation for the event, the Chandigarh Traffic Police has issued a detailed traffic advisory for both days. Vehicular movement will be restricted from 8 am to 1 pm on key stretches, including:
- Old Barricade Chowk on Uttar Marg to Hira Singh Chowk on Sarovar Path
- New Barricade Chowk on Vigyan Path towards Hira Singh Chowk
- St Kabir Light Point towards Chandigarh Golf Club up to Hira Singh Chowk on Vigyan Path
Pedestrian movement on Sarovar Path between Old Barricade Chowk and Hira Singh Chowk will also be restricted during these hours. All entertainment activities at Sukhna Lake will remain closed on both days, and while emergency vehicles and hearse vans will be facilitated, additional traffic restrictions or diversions may be implemented on other road stretches.
Entry Regulations and Logistics
Entry to the event is strictly regulated, with passes available on the Chandigarh Tourism App at Rs 100 per person. The venue capacity is capped at 10,000 persons per day, and passes have been available since March 24. In a key logistical measure, private vehicles will not be permitted near Sukhna Lake on show days. Instead, the Administration has designated seven pick-up and drop points across the city, from which CTU buses will provide free transportation to and from the venue. Visitors must use their designated boarding points and reach the pick-up points by 9 am, as CTU buses will depart promptly at that time.
Safety and Preparations
Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav chaired a comprehensive review meeting with stakeholder departments, including the Air Force, Police, Municipal Corporation, Health, and Fire Services, to ensure meticulous and incident-free execution. A team of 200 Civil Defence volunteers will be deployed to assist spectators at entry points, staircases, and drinking water stations. Visitors are advised to carry only transparent water bottles, avoid bringing eatables, and not bring children below six years of age. Adequate drinking water and sanitation facilities will be available, and a running commentary will enhance the spectator experience by explaining each aerobatic manoeuvre.
With preparations in full swing, Chandigarh is set to witness a sky-high spectacle that underscores the Indian Air Force's prowess and offers a unique entertainment opportunity for residents and visitors alike.
