The Raymond Tarmac Track in Thane roared to life on Sunday, January 25, as the Speedverse Autocross Tarmac V2.0 event transformed the venue into a hub of high-octane excitement. Organized meticulously by Zubair Agloria of Venomotorsportz, this gathering attracted a diverse mix of grassroots competitors, semi-professional racers, and dedicated motorsport fans, all converging to witness skill and speed on a challenging 1.2-kilometre autocross circuit.
This event successfully brought autocross back into the spotlight, emphasizing its core elements: tight corners that demand precision, short bursts of explosive acceleration, and split-second decision-making under pressure. The circuit layout tested every participant's mettle, creating an atmosphere charged with adrenaline and competitive spirit.
A Tale of Two Generations: 18-Year-Old vs. 71-Year-Old Racer
One of the most compelling stories to emerge from the day was the remarkable age gap evident on the timing sheets. Eighteen-year-old Veer Sheth and 71-year-old Pradeep Nair delivered performances that were almost inseparable, with Sheth clocking a time of 1:97 and Nair close behind at 1:98. This narrow margin highlighted how motorsport transcends age barriers, uniting enthusiasts across generations.
"That's the story to take away today," remarked organizer Zubair Agloria. "Veer is 18, Pradeep is 71, and they were at loggerheads with each other on the track. For Veer Sheth, a Marine Drive resident, this event marked his inaugural foray into autocross, despite having years of racing experience at higher levels. "I'm 18 years old, and I've been racing since I was 10," Sheth shared. "I've competed in Formula 4 cars, with my last race occurring just last year. I had never tried autocross before, but it's been an absolute blast—and I managed to win. I participated with a new Volkswagen Tiguan, and the way that car handles and picks up speed is truly amazing." His presence underscored a growing trend of young drivers seeking structured motorsport platforms to hone their abilities.
At the opposite end of the spectrum was Pradeep Nair, who traveled all the way from Pune to compete in his Fiat Punto. "People often say that after 40, you shouldn't engage in motorsports, but I've persisted because I genuinely enjoy it," Nair stated. "My long-term vision is to eventually start an academy—India desperately needs that. Parents should take a keen interest in enrolling their children in proper academies before purchasing them powerful cars. Otherwise, it's akin to handing them a machine gun without proper training." Nair, who also participates in hill climbs and autocross championships, added that this year he is aiming for a full championship campaign, demonstrating his enduring passion and commitment.
