Kushagra Gaur: From Autism Diagnosis to Special Olympics Golf Champion
At just three years old, while most children are still mastering the alphabet, Kushagra Gaur was already copying entire newspaper headlines with remarkable precision. "If he saw something written like 'Indian Golf Premier League,' he would come home and write the whole phrase," his mother, Shweta Gaur, fondly recalls. Today, at 29, the Gurgaon-based athlete has transformed that early fascination into an extraordinary journey as an international Special Olympics medallist, a competitive amateur golfer, a musician, and an artist with a knack for picking up new languages almost instantly.
A Diagnosis and a Decision to Focus on Strengths
Kushagra was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was about two and a half years old, a revelation that initially shook his family. "Any parent would feel shaken," Shweta admits. However, she chose to pivot from limitations to possibilities, stating, "We must accept the truth and move forward." This mindset became the cornerstone of Kushagra's development, emphasizing his abilities over any labels.
Discovering Golf: A Sport That Clicked
Golf entered Kushagra's life almost by accident. As a toddler, he would accompany his parents to golf courses, watching players for hours with intense focus. His mother initially tried introducing him to various team sports like cricket, basketball, and volleyball, but these proved challenging due to social complexities. "Golf was different," she explains. "His hand-eye coordination was excellent, and he could focus for long periods." By age 14, he was regularly playing nine holes and soon advanced to full 18-hole rounds, showcasing a natural aptitude for the sport.
Rising Through the Ranks: Special Olympics and Beyond
Kushagra's dedication quickly propelled him onto the international stage through the Special Olympics pathway. He began competing at the Macau Special Olympics Golf Masters, where he amassed an impressive collection of gold, silver, and bronze medals across five editions of the tournament. His gold medal victory in Macau was a significant achievement for India, earning him a place in the Limca Book of Records and highlighting his prowess on a global scale.
Currently, Kushagra trains rigorously at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, practising six days a week under professional coaches. His handicap has dropped to as low as five, reflecting impressive technical consistency and commitment. He has also started competing in mainstream tournaments, such as the IGU North India Feeder Tour, where he finished 18th among 57 players—a promising result as he transitions into more competitive circuits.
Current Endeavors and Future Aspirations
Kushagra Gaur is currently participating in the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) 2026 in Chandigarh, which runs from March 11 to 13 and features 58 players, including nine amateurs. His achievements extend to events like the BMW Night Drives at DLF Golf Club, where he has secured wins as champion, runner-up, and second runner-up, along with awards for Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin. Inspired by his favorite golfer, Rory McIlroy, whom he admires for precision and consistency, Kushagra has set a clear goal: to turn professional in golf.

Kushagra's journey transcends mere sporting success; it is about expanding horizons for athletes with disabilities. His mother encapsulates this philosophy: "We never focused on the diagnosis. We focused on his strengths. Once people see ability, labels disappear."
