Assam Government Launches Major Training Initiative in Guwahati
The Department of Sports and Youth Welfare of the Assam Government has launched a significant high-performance training camp in Guwahati. This initiative operates in collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport. The camp covers seven different sports disciplines.
Camp Structure and Inauguration
Kausar J Hilaly, the Secretary for Sports and Youth Welfare, officially inaugurated the camps. Training for chess, table tennis, and tennis started on Saturday. The taekwondo program begins tomorrow.
The collaboration with the Inspire Institute of Sport brings internationally benchmarked programs to three core sports:
- Taekwondo
- Athletics
- Archery
The Department of Sports and Youth Welfare directly supports the remaining four sports:

- Table Tennis
- Tennis
- Swimming
Strategic Focus and Objectives
This initiative strongly emphasizes creating long-term training systems. These systems align directly with India's Olympic roadmap. A key goal involves identifying new sporting talent from across Assam. The program also focuses on upgrading the skills of state coaches through modern training methodologies.
Detailed Camp Information
Chess Camp: This camp takes place at the Civil Services Officers' Institute in Khanapara. It features two prominent coaches: Bulgaria's Dejan Bojkov and India's Vishal Sareen. A total of 47 selected athletes and coaches from Assam are participating. The chess camp will continue until January 27.
Table Tennis Camp: This camp is being held at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium in Dispur. International coach Sekpong Yomjinda from Thailand is leading the training. The camp includes 52 boys and girls, along with six coaches from the state.
Tennis Camp: Training is underway at the Department of Sports Tennis Courts in Dispur. Brazilian coach Vinicius Ono is in attendance. The camp involves 32 boys and girls and six state coaches. Both the Tennis and Table Tennis camps will run until January 24.
