Aronian emphasized that such acts of "unsportsmanlike behavior" are penalized in other sports to set an example for younger athletes.

The incident occurred on Monday when Magnus Carlsen, after losing a tense blitz game to Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi, slammed his fist on the table. The moment was captured on video and later shared by arbiter Chris Bird, who officiated the match. Bird noted in his post on X that no equipment was damaged and that Carlsen immediately apologized to both his opponent and the arbiter.
However, Aronian was not pleased with the arbiter's light-hearted tone. Responding directly to Bird's post, the respected Grandmaster stated, "Chris, I don't think we should be normalizing tantrums like that." He elaborated that loud noises can disrupt other players who are concentrating on their own games. "In many sports such acts are penalized as unsportsmanlike behavior in order to send a message to younger athletes," Aronian added, drawing a clear line on the expected conduct at the highest level.

Arbiter Chris Bird offered a defensive reply to Aronian's comments, clarifying that it was not his intention to seem okay with the behavior. "I think in the video you can see I briefly spoke with Magnus, who like I said apologized. Beyond that point the issue was handed to my superiors to deal with as they saw fit," Bird explained.
