NEW DELHI: Manipur witnessed a significant political transition on Wednesday as BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as the state's new chief minister. This development comes nearly a year after Manipur was placed under President's Rule, marking a crucial step toward restoring democratic governance in the northeastern state.
A New Leadership Amid Ongoing Challenges
Singh's appointment follows the resignation of former chief minister N Biren Singh, who faced mounting criticism over his handling of the ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kukis that erupted in May 2023. The conflict has resulted in more than 260 fatalities and displaced thousands of people, creating a complex humanitarian and security crisis that the new administration must urgently address.
Political Journey and Background
Yumnam Khemchand Singh has represented the Singjamei constituency since 2017, establishing himself as a senior leader within the BJP. His political career includes serving as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022, where he oversaw parliamentary proceedings during a turbulent period. Subsequently, he held cabinet positions in the second Biren Singh government, managing key portfolios such as Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD), Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and Education.
His electoral journey began in 2012 when he contested the Assembly elections on an All India Trinamool Congress ticket but was defeated by a Congress candidate. He joined the BJP the following year, aligning with the party's growing influence in the region. A native of Singjamei Yumnam Leikai, Singh completed his high school education in 1978 from Ram Lal Paul High School in Imphal. He is married and has a son.
Martial Arts Legacy and Recent Recognition
Beyond politics, Singh is renowned as a taekwondo exponent who has practiced martial arts since the age of 16. In the early 1980s, he played a pivotal role in introducing taekwondo to Assam and Manipur, founding the All Assam Taekwondo Association. As a black belt holder, he previously served as vice-president of the Taekwondo Federation of India, contributing to the sport's development nationally.
In a notable achievement, Singh became the first Indian to be awarded the 5th Dan black belt in traditional South Korean taekwondo in October 2024. This recognition underscores his dedication to the martial art and his status as a respected figure in the taekwondo community.
Outreach Efforts and Political Significance
Recently, Singh garnered attention for his visits to Kuki-Zo villages in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. These trips marked the first outreach by a Meitei MLA across ethnic lines since the outbreak of violence, signaling a potential shift toward reconciliation and dialogue. Such efforts are crucial as the state grapples with deep-seated ethnic tensions that have hindered peace and stability.
Governing Coalition and Future Prospects
The BJP currently holds 37 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly and is supported by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies, including the National People's Party (NPP), Naga People's Front (NPF), and Independent legislators. This coalition provides a foundation for governance, but the new chief minister faces the formidable task of bridging ethnic divides and ensuring lasting peace.
As Singh assumes office, his administration will need to prioritize conflict resolution, rehabilitation of displaced communities, and economic recovery.
