Voting began on Saturday at 15 polling stations across two assembly constituencies in West Bengal after the Election Commission of India ordered repolls. The repoll was necessitated in 11 polling stations of the Magrahat Paschim assembly constituency and four in Diamond Harbour, following reports of irregularities and violence during the initial phase of voting.
Election Commission Orders Repoll
The Election Commission directed the repoll after receiving complaints of booth capturing, intimidation, and malfunctioning of electronic voting machines during the earlier round of polling. The decision aims to ensure free and fair elections in the affected areas.
Details of Repolling Stations
In Magrahat Paschim, repolling is underway at 11 polling stations, while in Diamond Harbour, four stations are conducting the repoll. Security has been tightened with additional paramilitary forces deployed to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.
The voting process began at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM. Voters queued up early at the polling booths, with many expressing hope that the repoll would allow them to exercise their franchise without fear.
West Bengal has been witnessing a high-stakes electoral battle, with the ruling party and opposition accusing each other of violence and malpractice. The repoll is seen as a critical step to uphold democratic integrity.
