Violent Protests Erupt at Bengal Congress Headquarters Over Candidate Selection
Kolkata witnessed violent scenes on Wednesday afternoon as clashes broke out at the West Bengal Congress headquarters, Bidhan Bhawan. The unrest was triggered by a section of party workers demanding a change in the candidate nominated for the Ballygunge constituency.
Violent Confrontation and Allegations
A scuffle erupted when Congress workers attempted to storm the party headquarters. During the confrontation, at least one worker sustained a head injury. Protesters forcefully entered the main hall, where they vandalized furniture, smashed window panes, and threw chairs in a display of anger.
Adding to the seriousness of the incident, a female worker alleged that she had been molested during the violent protest. Hundreds of party workers staged this aggressive demonstration against the state leadership, expressing deep grievances over what they called an "unfavourable" distribution of tickets for the upcoming elections.
Roots of the Discontent
Supporters of Ballygunge Congress leader Zayed Hossain claimed he had been promised the seat and accused the party leadership of blatant nepotism. The protesters specifically targeted state president Subhankar Sarkar and the selection committee, alleging they were selecting outsiders while ignoring loyal, grassroots workers.
Protesters emphasized that grassroots workers were not consulted before candidates were nominated, highlighting a significant communication gap within the party structure. The nomination of Roahan Mitra, son of late Congress leader Somen Mitra, for the Ballygunge constituency became the focal point of these allegations.
Widespread Discontent Across Districts
The discontent was not confined to Kolkata alone. Similar reports of vandalism and "office lockouts" emerged from district offices in Serampore and East Burdwan, indicating widespread dissatisfaction within the party's state ranks. These parallel incidents suggest the protest in Kolkata was not an isolated event but rather symptomatic of broader organizational issues.
Official Response and Campaign Continuation
Despite the violent protests, Roahan Mitra continued his campaign activities on Wednesday. Addressing the situation, Mitra stated, "The party believes in selection of candidates on merit. There was discontent among a section of workers. They can convey that peacefully to the party leadership."
This statement underscores the party's official position while acknowledging the existence of discontent among workers. The incident raises serious questions about candidate selection processes, internal democracy, and worker consultation within political parties ahead of crucial elections.
