Uttarakhand Chief Minister Advocates for Strategic Continuity in Key Meeting
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has formally requested the Union Defence Ministry to maintain the current administrative setup concerning two crucial matters: the location of the Air Force Audit Branch and management of a vital hill road. The requests were presented during a significant meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on November 18, 2025.
Strategic Push to Retain Air Force Audit Branch in Dehradun
During the discussions, CM Dhami strongly advocated for the Air Force Audit Branch to remain in Dehradun, highlighting the city's long-standing role as its base. He emphasized Dehradun's strategic geographical position in a state that shares sensitive international borders with both China and Nepal.
The Chief Minister argued that the city has evolved into a significant hub for defence and paramilitary establishments. Keeping the audit branch in Dehradun, he noted, ensures effective coordination and operational convenience for personnel who frequently interact with other agencies stationed in the region. Dhami specifically requested a review of any potential proposal to relocate the branch.
Officials reported that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh responded positively, assuring the Uttarakhand delegation that the matter would be examined with a constructive outlook.
State PWD to Maintain Control of Crucial Pilgrimage Route
The second critical issue raised involved the maintenance of the Gwaldam–Nandkesari–Tharali–Dewal–Mundoli–Wan road, a major inter-district route in Chamoli district. This mountain road is not only essential for local connectivity but also serves as the primary access corridor for the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra.
This traditional pilgrimage, which occurs once every twelve years and attracts devotees from across the country, is next scheduled for 2026. CM Dhami requested that the Uttarakhand Public Works Department (PWD) continue to manage this route's upkeep.
The state government's rationale is based on the PWD's extensive experience with the challenging terrain. The department possesses an established workforce and has proven its ability to coordinate effectively with district authorities, especially when addressing frequent disruptions caused by the monsoon season, such as landslides and road subsidence.
With substantial preparatory work required for the 2026 yatra—including infrastructure checks, slope stabilization, and multi-season repair schedules—the administration believes that transferring control now could cause significant delays. Continuity with the PWD is seen as vital for ensuring the pilgrimage's smooth and safe execution.
Looking Ahead: Defence Ministry's Assurance
Following the meeting, it was understood that the Defence Minister acknowledged the state's concerns. He conveyed that both requests—regarding the Air Force Audit Branch and the hill road—would be examined in detail by the relevant departments within the ministry.
This high-level engagement underscores Uttarakhand's focus on balancing strategic defence needs with the logistical demands of hosting a major cultural and religious event, both of which are critical to the state's security and socio-economic fabric.
