Uttarakhand renames Lord Curzon Road to Nanda-Sunanda Road

In a significant move, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced the renaming of a historic road and launched a series of development projects aimed at boosting tourism in the state. The announcements were made during a major public event in Chamoli district on Friday.

Historic Road Gets a New Identity

The historic Lord Curzon Road, which connects Gwaldam with Tapovan near Jyotirmath in Chamoli, will now be known as Nanda–Sunanda Road. This important route links two prominent hill destinations and is heavily used by tourists visiting the region. The renaming decision was announced by CM Dhami during the 24th Band Development Industrial, Tourism, Farmer and Cultural Fair held at Peepalkoti in Chamoli district.

A Boost for Tourism and Local Infrastructure

Alongside the renaming, the Chief Minister unveiled a comprehensive package of development initiatives. These projects are specifically designed to enhance tourist facilities and improve local infrastructure in the district. The key initiatives include:

  • Expansion of the Semaldala sports ground.
  • Provision of basic facilities, including drinking water, along the revered Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra route.
  • Beautification of the Rajrajeshwari Temple located at Kurud.
  • Construction of a new tourist rest house at the Ansuya Devi Temple in Mandal.

Dhami emphasized the dual role of fairs like the Band Development Fair, stating they are crucial for promoting local products while simultaneously showcasing the region's rich folk culture. He highlighted a key shift in government practice, revealing that all mementos and gifts distributed by the state government are now being prepared by women from local self-help groups.

Government's Broader Vision and Public Appeal

The Chief Minister called for active public participation in governance, urging people to resolve local issues at the ‘nyaya panchayat’ level. This appeal was made under the umbrella of the Jan-Jan Ki Sarkar, Jan-Jan Ke Dwar programme. He expressed his gratitude to local residents, traders, farmers, and the organizers associated with the successful fair.

Reiterating his government's commitment to broader national and state-level campaigns, Dhami mentioned initiatives such as One District One Festival, Vocal for Local, and Make in India. These efforts collectively aim to foster regional development, empower local communities, and put Uttarakhand firmly on the tourist map through improved infrastructure and cultural promotion.
