In a significant move to bolster Uttar Pradesh's technology and industrial landscape, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a high-level meeting with Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran in Lucknow on Monday. The discussions centered on forging a long-term partnership across key sectors, with a major focus on artificial intelligence, IT services expansion, and scaling up manufacturing investments.
Blueprint for a Tech-Driven Uttar Pradesh
The meeting, detailed in an official state government release, reviewed existing projects and explored new avenues for collaboration. A standout proposal was the creation of an "AI City" in Lucknow. This ambitious project is envisioned as a hub to foster AI-led innovation and cultivate a vibrant startup ecosystem. The government stated that the initiative is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities linked to technology services and emerging digital tools.
While the statement did not specify the project's current stage, land requirements, or a detailed implementation model, it signals the state's serious intent to position itself at the forefront of India's AI revolution. The talks also covered plans to significantly expand the footprint of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) within the state. TCS is proposed to increase its workforce in Lucknow and Noida from approximately 16,000 to around 30,000 employees, a move poised to substantially augment UP's IT talent pool.
Strengthening Manufacturing and Skill Development
Beyond IT and AI, the discussions spanned a wide spectrum of strategic sectors. On the manufacturing front, the Tata group expressed interest in scaling up investments in electronics production, including mobile devices and electronic components. The statement referenced a memorandum of understanding between the Tata group and Intel, aimed at strengthening the electronics manufacturing ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh.
Electric mobility and defence manufacturing were also key agenda items. Prospects linked to electric buses and other EV models were discussed, alongside potential investments in drones, missiles, and defence vehicles under the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, with Jhansi highlighted as a key node.
Parallel to investment talks, the meeting emphasized building human capital. Progress was reviewed on a Centre of Excellence in Gorakhpur, being developed at an estimated cost of ₹48 crore. This facility aims to provide technical training and capacity-building, specifically to improve access to advanced skills for youth in eastern UP. Furthermore, an MoU involving IIT Kanpur proposes training initiatives in cutting-edge areas like AI, cybersecurity, data science, 3D printing, drones, and space technology.

Chief Minister Adityanath assured the Tata group leadership of the state's commitment to providing stable policies, transparent processes, and an enabling business environment. This dialogue aligns with Uttar Pradesh's broader strategy to attract industrial and services-led investment through sector-specific policies and corridor-based infrastructure development in recent years.
