Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Approves Rehabilitation of Displaced Hindu Bengali Families
The state cabinet of Uttar Pradesh, in a significant move on Tuesday, granted post-facto approval to a proposal aimed at the rehabilitation of Hindu Bengali families who were displaced from former East Pakistan, now known as Bangladesh. This decision underscores the government's commitment to addressing long-standing humanitarian issues and providing stability to affected communities.
Resettlement Details and Locations
Under this approval, a total of 99 families from the Mawana tehsil area in Meerut district will be resettled. The designated relocation sites are Bhaisaya and Tajpur Tarasoli villages, located in the Rasulabad tehsil of Kanpur Dehat district. Officials have emphasized that this initiative is designed to offer permanent residential security to these families, many of whom have been awaiting formal rehabilitation for an extended period.
Lease Rent and Legal Framework
As part of the comprehensive rehabilitation package, the cabinet has fixed the lease rent at a nominal rate of Re 1. Additionally, the approval includes the formalization of the land lease (patta) format, which will enable beneficiaries to obtain legal residential rights over the allotted land. This step is crucial for ensuring that the families have secure and recognized ownership, facilitating their integration into mainstream society.
Continuity in Rehabilitation Policy
The current decision builds upon provisions established in 2021, when a similar rehabilitation framework was approved for 63 displaced families. Authorities have stated that this move extends the same benefits to additional families, thereby ensuring continuity and consistency in the state's rehabilitation policy. This approach highlights a structured effort to systematically address displacement issues over time.
Administrative Actions and Legal Directives
Officials noted that administrative actions for the relocation were initiated earlier, in response to directions from the National Green Tribunal and due to the urgency of the matter. The cabinet's approval now formalizes these steps, paving the way for the completion of the rehabilitation process. This formalization is expected to streamline procedures and expedite the resettlement efforts.
Broader Implications and Government Perspective
Government sources have indicated that this initiative reflects the state's broader effort to resolve long-pending rehabilitation issues in a structured and dignified manner. By providing legal residential rights and security, the move aims to help displaced families integrate into society with enhanced dignity and stability. This rehabilitation effort is seen as a step towards fostering social cohesion and addressing historical displacements in the region.
