Former West Bengal minister Ujjal Biswas was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a case of alleged misappropriation of tarpaulins. The arrest came after a controversy erupted in the afternoon when several tarpaulins were reportedly being loaded onto a goods vehicle parked outside Biswas's residence in Krishnanagar.
Details of the Incident
According to sources, the tarpaulins were meant for distribution among flood-affected residents under a state government relief scheme. However, they were allegedly being diverted for personal use. Local residents spotted the loading activity and alerted the authorities, leading to a police investigation.
Police Action and Arrest
Following the complaint, a police team reached the spot and seized the vehicle along with the tarpaulins. Biswas was taken into custody later in the evening after preliminary questioning. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for criminal misappropriation of property.
The former minister, who served in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet, denied any wrongdoing. His legal team has stated that they will seek bail in the appropriate court. The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption in the distribution of relief materials during natural disasters. The state government has assured strict action against anyone found guilty of such malpractices.
