VD Satheesan: UDF to Expand as Broad Political Platform for Kerala Assembly Polls
UDF to Broaden Foundation for Kerala Assembly Elections: Satheesan

In a significant political statement, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan asserted on Monday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will approach the upcoming legislative assembly elections in Kerala with a significantly stronger and broader foundation. Speaking to media persons in Kottayam, Satheesan outlined the front's strategic evolution and future plans.

UDF Evolving Beyond a Traditional Coalition

Satheesan emphasized that the UDF is undergoing a fundamental transformation. He stated that it is no longer merely a coalition of several political parties but is actively evolving into a broad political platform. This platform, he argued, offers new dimensions to Kerala's coalition politics and is the key reason behind the front's recent electoral successes, including in by-elections.

"The front's success in elections is due to this political platform, which encompasses a wide range of people and opinion makers beyond just a coalition of political parties," Satheesan explained. He clarified that the UDF is not currently engaged in talks or negotiations with any other political entity, describing such decisions as inherently political.

Leadership and Strategic Expansion Plans

The Congress leader expressed strong confidence in the UDF's decision-making capabilities. He delineated the roles within the alliance, noting that while the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) decides on inductions into the Congress party, the UDF leadership holds the prerogative on who joins the front.

Satheesan revealed ambitious plans for expansion, indicating that the alliance's foundation would be broadened in various ways. Intriguingly, he suggested that this expansion may include constituents from the ruling LDF, the NDA, and other groups not currently affiliated with these major fronts. However, he maintained an element of suspense, stating that details would be revealed in due course.

Acknowledging Victory and Outlining Future Challenges

While celebrating the UDF's performance in the recent local body elections, Satheesan struck a note of caution. He thanked the people of Kottayam, where he claimed the UDF achieved its most significant political victory in the district.

However, he was quick to add that winning local elections does not mean everything has been achieved. He underscored the need for more hard work to reach the desired number of seats in the crucial legislative assembly elections. He praised UDF leaders and workers for fulfilling their responsibilities well in the local polls and expressed confidence in their ability to handle greater responsibilities effectively in the assembly elections.

Process for Leadership Selection in Local Bodies

Addressing queries about leadership positions in the newly won local bodies, Satheesan clarified that social media chatter does not determine appointments. A formal procedure is in place. He stated that the UDF district leadership, in consultation with its constituent parties, would make these decisions based on guidelines provided by the central UDF leadership.

For Congress-led bodies, he explained that the KPCC would make the decisions, with relevant guidelines to be issued soon. The entire process will be completed in the presence of observers appointed by the KPCC and the District Congress Committees (DCCs).
