Two Women Killed, Five Injured in Taxi Plunge into Gorge in Uttarakhand's Bageshwar
A tragic accident in Uttarakhand's Bageshwar district has resulted in the deaths of two women and left five others injured after the taxi they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged approximately 100 metres into a deep gorge. The incident occurred on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting immediate rescue operations.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident took place near Munar on the Rikhadi–Patiasar motor road in the Kapkot area of Bageshwar district. According to district disaster management officials, the vehicle was carrying a total of seven people, including the driver. The passengers consisted of five women and two men, all of whom were on board when the taxi suddenly went out of control near Bavebend and tumbled into the gorge below.
The two women who lost their lives in this devastating crash have been identified as Panuli Devi, aged 60, and Supli Devi, aged 68. Their bodies were recovered from the gorge by a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who worked diligently at the scene. After recovery, the bodies were formally handed over to the police for further procedures and to notify the families.
Immediate Rescue and Response Efforts
Local residents who witnessed or heard about the accident rushed to the spot without delay, initiating rescue efforts to save those trapped in the wreckage. With the combined assistance of villagers and police personnel, the injured individuals were carefully pulled out from the gorge and transported to the Community Health Centre in Kapkot for initial medical attention.
The injured victims, who are currently undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Bageshwar, have been named as Deepak Ram, Nima Devi, Prema Devi, Jasoda Devi, and Kamal Chaudiya. Medical staff are monitoring their conditions closely, providing necessary care to ensure their recovery from the traumatic incident.
Broader Implications and Safety Concerns
This accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in hilly regions like Uttarakhand, where treacherous terrain and narrow roads can pose significant risks to travellers. The swift response from both local communities and official disaster response teams underscores the importance of coordinated efforts in emergency situations.
Authorities are likely to investigate the exact cause of the skid and subsequent plunge, examining factors such as road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver behaviour. Such incidents serve as a stark reminder for enhanced safety measures and vigilance while navigating mountainous roads, especially in remote areas where access to immediate medical help may be limited.
As the injured continue their treatment and families mourn the loss of their loved ones, the community remains united in support, hoping for a full recovery for those affected and reflecting on the fragility of life in the face of such unforeseen tragedies.
