Tragic Drowning Incident in Gandak River During Post-Wedding Ritual
A post-wedding ritual in Bihar's Saran district turned into a devastating tragedy on Wednesday when four individuals encountered a life-threatening situation while bathing in the Gandak river. The incident occurred near Baijalpur Jagdambasthan under the jurisdiction of the Sonepur police station area, resulting in two confirmed fatalities and two persons remaining missing as of Thursday morning.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to local residents, the tragedy unfolded following a wedding ceremony at the residence of Janardan Singh, a resident of Baijalpur. Family members had gathered at the Gandak river to perform the traditional 'chauthari' ritual, which is customarily observed on the fourth day after marriage. While participating in the ritual bath, four individuals suddenly found themselves in deep water and began drowning.
Eyewitnesses present at the location immediately jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue the struggling victims. They managed to pull two women from the water and rushed them to Sadar Hospital in Hajipur for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital declared both women dead upon arrival.
Victims Identified and Search Operations Underway
The deceased have been officially identified as 42-year-old Babita Devi, wife of Janardan Singh, and 40-year-old Gudiya Devi, wife of Ravi Kumar, who was a resident of Bakhtiyarpur in Patna district. The two individuals who remain missing following the incident have been identified as 12-year-old Rishu Kumar and Richa Kumari, who is the daughter of the deceased Gudiya Devi.
Sonepur Station House Officer Dilip Kumar provided details about the ongoing rescue efforts, stating, "Local police personnel and a specialized State Disaster Response Force team conducted extensive search operations throughout the Gandak river area in an attempt to locate the two missing persons. The rescue operation had to be temporarily suspended in the evening due to darkness and will resume on Thursday morning with renewed efforts."
Community Response and Safety Concerns
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising serious questions about water safety during religious and cultural rituals. The Gandak river, which flows through multiple districts in Bihar, has been the site of similar drowning incidents in the past, particularly during festival seasons and ritual gatherings.
Local authorities have emphasized the importance of exercising extreme caution when participating in water-based rituals, especially in rivers with unpredictable currents and depth variations. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers associated with traditional practices that involve water immersion, particularly when participants may not be strong swimmers or familiar with specific water conditions.
As the search operations continue for the two missing individuals, the community mourns the loss of the two women who perished in this unexpected tragedy. The incident highlights the need for increased safety awareness and precautionary measures during cultural and religious ceremonies that involve water activities.
