Tripura Courier's Suicide After Public Assault Sparks Protests, CM Orders Probe
Tripura: Courier's suicide after assault triggers protests

Tension has gripped the northern Tripura town of Dharmanagar, located near the Assam border, following the tragic suicide of a young delivery executive. The incident, stemming from alleged public humiliation and assault, has united residents across political lines in a demand for justice.

A Tragic End Following Public Humiliation

Prasenjit Sarkar, a 23-year-old courier boy, ended his life on December 14. Reports indicate that his drastic step was a direct consequence of severe mental anguish caused by a traumatic public incident. According to his family and local accounts, Sarkar was assaulted and humiliated by a group of youths in a dispute related to his delivery work.

A video of this altercation circulated widely on social media platforms, amplifying his humiliation. The group allegedly included a female teacher from a private school, identified as Sangita Bhattacharjee. The viral footage and the public nature of the incident are said to have deeply impacted Sarkar's self-esteem and mental well-being, ultimately leading him to take his own life.

Widespread Outrage and Demands for Justice

The community's grief quickly transformed into anger and protest. Since December 15, the youth of Dharmanagar have been demonstrating, demanding severe punishment for those responsible for driving Sarkar to suicide. Protesters initially blocked roads at the Dharmanagar Old Motor Stand area before marching to the office of the Superintendent of Police.

They have issued warnings of intensifying their agitation if the suspects are not swiftly apprehended. The protest has garnered support from civil society groups, youth organizations, and the general public, who have strongly condemned the lack of arrests even four days after the incident came to light.

Official Response and Call for Calm

In response to the escalating situation, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that a formal investigation is now underway. He assured the public that anyone found guilty in connection with the case would face strict legal consequences. The CM also appealed to the community to maintain peace and calm to allow authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding Sarkar's death.

The case has highlighted issues of public bullying, mental health, and the urgent need for accountability. As the investigation proceeds, the town of Dharmanagar remains on edge, awaiting justice for Prasenjit Sarkar.
