Trichy Grapples with Widespread Power Outages Following Sudden Storm
Several parts of Trichy city were plunged into darkness as power outages struck following strong winds and heavy rain that lashed the district on Sunday night. The electricity supply disruption persisted for more than an hour across multiple localities, causing significant inconvenience to residents.
Abrupt Weather Change Triggers Chaos
According to local residents, the weather transformed abruptly around 8:45 PM when dark clouds gathered over the city. This was swiftly followed by gusty winds, thunder, and intense lightning. The sudden spell of rain lasted approximately one hour, providing temporary relief from the escalating heat that had gripped the region in recent days.
Power Disruptions Across Key Areas
However, the downpour also led to extensive power disruptions across crucial areas of Trichy. In some locations, electricity supply was deliberately cut even before the rain intensified as a precautionary measure against the strong winds. Residents reported that power outages extended well beyond an hour, severely impacting households.
In Srirangam, power supply remained disrupted even at 10:30 PM, more than an hour after the rain had subsided. Similarly, parts of Palakarai and surrounding neighbourhoods experienced prolonged outages during the late evening hours. In sections of Karumandpam, residents noted the power going off at least three times in short spells during the evening, even before the rain commenced.
Official Response and Infrastructure Damage
A senior Tangedco official addressed the situation, stating, "Due to gusty winds, there were four transformers that were hit and I have just come from visiting those." This highlights the direct impact of the severe weather on critical electrical infrastructure, necessitating immediate inspection and repair efforts.
The combination of adverse weather conditions and precautionary measures led to a challenging night for Trichy's residents, underscoring the vulnerability of power systems during sudden meteorological events.
