Howrah Political Clash Turns Fatal: TMC Worker Dies After Alleged Assault by CPM-Supporter Husband
A tragic incident in Howrah has highlighted the dangerous intersection of political rivalry and domestic disputes. A 32-year-old Trinamool Congress worker, Sakila Khatun, died on Saturday night after allegedly being punched by her husband, 42-year-old Md Javed, who is reportedly a supporter of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Details of the Incident
The fatal altercation occurred around 11 pm at workers' quarters near Bally Jute Mill in Howrah. According to police and local sources, the couple, originally from Siwan in Bihar, had been married for 12 years and had three children. Neighbors revealed that their political affiliations—Sakila with the Trinamool Congress and Javed with the CPM—were a frequent source of conflict, often escalating into physical fights.
The argument on Saturday night reportedly began after Javed returned from work. Sakila allegedly urged him to stop attending CPM meetings and instead take up additional work after his shifts at the jute mill to better support their family. In response, Javed objected to her participation in Trinamool activities and suggested she start a tea and snacks stall near the mill.
Escalation and Aftermath
During the heated exchange, Javed allegedly punched Sakila, causing her to hit a wall. She suffered a fractured skull, collapsed on the bed, and died shortly after. Their three children, who were in another room, rushed in upon hearing the commotion and found their mother unresponsive.
Javed then took the children to a police station and surrendered, confessing to the assault. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. The children have since been taken to homes in Liluah and Malipanchghara for care.
Legal Proceedings
The accused, Md Javed, was produced before a Howrah court on Sunday, which remanded him to five days' police custody. Authorities are investigating the case further, with neighbors' testimonies indicating a pattern of political disagreements fueling domestic violence.
This incident underscores the volatile mix of personal and political tensions in some households, leading to devastating consequences. It also raises questions about the role of political polarization in everyday life, particularly in regions with strong party loyalties.
