Tragic House Collapse in Barnala Claims Three Lives During Repair Work

A devastating incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday when a double-storey house undergoing repairs collapsed in Pharwahi village, located in Punjab's Barnala district. The catastrophic event resulted in the tragic deaths of three labourers who were working on the structure.

Structural Weakness and Fatal Rainfall

The house, owned by Vishal Kumar of Pharwahi village, had developed a dangerous tilt due to persistent sewage seepage that had severely undermined its foundation. To address this critical structural issue, Kumar had engaged contractor Ranjit Singh from Moga approximately a week prior to the incident.

The repair strategy involved using hydraulic jacks to raise the sunken side of the building. Ranjit Singh had deployed four labourers to carry out this delicate operation. However, according to police reports, a fresh spell of rainfall proved fatal for the already stressed structure, which had been partially elevated for several weeks.

Early Morning Catastrophe and Rescue Efforts

Villagers reported hearing a loud noise around 4:15 am and immediately rushed to the scene, only to discover that the house had completely given way. In a desperate rescue attempt, they managed to pull three men from the debris. All three victims were swiftly transported to the civil hospital in Barnala, where medical authorities declared them brought dead upon arrival.

The deceased labourers have been identified as:

  • Varinder Singh from Moga
  • Prince from Moga
  • Gurjeet Singh, a resident of Dala village near Moga

Narrow Escapes and Legal Consequences

A fourth labourer miraculously avoided the tragedy by deciding to return home late on Saturday evening, leaving his three colleagues behind at the worksite where they routinely slept overnight. The family of houseowner Vishal Kumar was also spared, having vacated the premises to stay in a rented house nearby as a precaution during the repair work.

Barnala DSP Satbir Singh confirmed that authorities have registered a case under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to causing death by negligence. The case has been filed against contractor Ranjit Singh based on a formal complaint submitted by tehsildar Kuldeep Singh.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This tragic incident highlights significant safety concerns regarding structural repairs and construction practices in residential areas. The combination of pre-existing foundation damage from sewage seepage, the stress of partial elevation during repairs, and additional pressure from rainfall created a perfect storm of structural failure.

The case raises important questions about:

  1. Proper assessment of structural integrity before undertaking repair work
  2. Adequate safety measures for labourers during hazardous operations
  3. Contractor accountability and adherence to safety protocols
  4. The impact of environmental factors like rainfall on compromised structures

As investigations continue, this tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of structural safety and proper oversight in construction and repair projects, particularly when human lives are at stake.
