Malda: A new holding centre for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants was inaugurated in Malda district on Wednesday, marking the third such facility in the region, as reported by Subhro Maitra. The newly established centre is located in Bamangola. The first holding centre in Malda was set up at English Bazar, followed by the second at Old Malda.
Capacity and Operations
Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh stated that with the addition of this new centre, the three holding centres together can accommodate between 250 and 300 inmates. Over the past month, 23 infiltrators have been detained in Malda. Additionally, approximately 160 Bangladeshi nationals were transferred to the English Bazar centre from Basirhat in North 24 Parganas.
Political Response
BJP MLA Gopal Chandra Saha commented on the development, saying, 'There is no room for infiltrators here. Our government has made its intention clear. We are not going to feed them as guests for long.'
This expansion of holding centres underscores the ongoing efforts to address illegal immigration in the region.
