Violence Erupts in Thane Civic Polls as Supporters of Rival Candidates Clash
Thane Civic Polls: Supporters Clash, Police Intervene

Violence disrupted the Thane civic elections on Thursday when supporters of two rival candidates clashed in the Manpada area. Police had to step in to control the situation, officials confirmed on Friday.

Tensions Flare in Ward 3

The confrontation occurred in Ward 3 of Manpada. Supporters of former mayor Meenakshi Shinde, the official Shiv Sena candidate, faced off against backers of independent candidate Bhushan Bhoir. Bhoir is a rebel from the Shiv Sena party.

Allegations Fly from Both Sides

Shinde accused Bhoir of mobilising armed supporters to provoke violence. In response, Bhoir's camp claimed that Shinde's group threw chilli powder into their candidate's eyes. The exchange of accusations heightened tensions on the ground.

The situation escalated further when protesters intercepted a bus carrying ballot boxes. They attempted to vandalise the vehicles, adding to the chaos. Local MP Naresh Mhaske visited the spot to assess the situation.

Authorities Work to Restore Calm

"I have reached here to create an atmosphere of peace and to gather information regarding the incident involving Meenakshi Shinde," Mhaske told reporters. Thane DCP Prashant Kadam assured the public that the police had mediated the dispute.

"Whatever dispute there was between the two groups, the police have mediated and calmed down the matter," Kadam stated. He confirmed that all ballot boxes had reached the strongroom and urged citizens not to believe rumours.

Police Deploy Heavy Presence

Authorities have deployed a heavy police presence in Manpada ahead of the vote counting. This move aims to prevent any further incidents and ensure a smooth process.

Accusations of Electoral Malpractice

Throughout the election campaign, both candidates have accused each other of distributing cash and intimidating voters. These allegations have marred the electoral atmosphere in the constituency.

Despite the violent clash and serious accusations, police noted that no formal complaint has been registered so far. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
