Jairam Thakur Accuses Congress Government of Misrepresenting Himachal Pradesh's Financial Situation
Leader of opposition Jairam Thakur on Thursday launched a scathing critique against the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, alleging a deliberate misrepresentation of the state's financial health. Thakur asserted that under the Narendra Modi-led central government, Himachal Pradesh has received over five times more funding compared to the era of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
Substantial Increase in Central Funding Under Modi Government
Addressing a press conference in Shimla, Thakur highlighted stark disparities in financial allocations. He pointed to finance commission data, revealing that the state received Rs 89,254 crore under the 14th and 15th Finance Commissions, a dramatic surge from the Rs 18,000 crore allocated during the 12th and 13th Commissions under UPA rule. "This data unequivocally shows that injustice prevailed during the UPA regime, while the current central government has provided unprecedented support," Thakur stated.
Congress Government Blamed for Financial Mismanagement
Thakur argued that despite this substantial central assistance, the Congress government continues to irresponsibly blame the previous administration instead of focusing on prudent fiscal management. He urged the state to adopt solutions-oriented approaches, especially following the discontinuation of the revenue deficit grant (RDG). Fiscal discipline and sound policy frameworks are absolutely essential for sustainable development, timely payment of salaries and pensions, and fulfilling all governmental commitments, he emphasised.
Allegations of Data Inconsistencies and Political Manipulation
Referring to recent legislative assembly proceedings, Thakur accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of presenting conflicting data on state loans. He noted inconsistencies between statements regarding total borrowings and repayments, alleging that such politicisation of financial issues severely undermines public trust. "During the previous BJP tenure, a significant portion of the state's debt was systematically repaid. In contrast, the current government immediately secured loans of Rs 6,900 crore but has incorrectly attributed this liability to the prior administration," Thakur detailed.
Call for Responsible Governance and Fact-Based Discourse
Thakur reaffirmed that the Bharatiya Janata Party remains prepared to cooperate in the state's interest for holistic development. However, he issued a stern warning against attempts to distort Himachal Pradesh's financial reality for narrow political gains. "Political rhetoric alone cannot resolve complex economic challenges. We will counter any misinformation with verifiable facts and robust data," he asserted. Thakur concluded by stressing that responsible, transparent governance is a fundamental prerequisite for effective democratic cooperation and the state's long-term prosperity.
