Tej Pratap Warms to BJP as Lalu Signals Thaw in RJD Chill
Political circles in Patna are buzzing with speculation after Tej Pratap Yadav's recent moves and his father Lalu Prasad's surprising appearance at a festive gathering. The developments hint at a possible thaw in the long-standing chill within the Rashtriya Janata Dal family.
Festive Gathering Sparks Political Chatter
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Janshakti Janata Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav hosted a Dahi Chuda feast in Patna. The event drew significant attention due to its notable attendees and the political messages it conveyed.
Among those present were Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, state ministers Ram Kripal Yadav and Ashok Choudhary, and most surprisingly, Tej Pratap's father and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.
The absence of Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Assembly, added another layer to the political drama. Despite receiving an invitation, Tejashwi chose not to attend his brother's event.
Tej Pratap's Political Ambitions
When questioned about potential BJP nomination as an MLC in Bihar's Upper House, Tej Pratap responded with careful wording. "Everyone wants to grow in politics," he stated. "My father also used to say that he dreamt of becoming the prime minister. If any responsibility is given to me, I will accept it."
This statement followed his attendance at Deputy CM Sinha's Dahi Chuda event just a day earlier. At that gathering, when asked about joining the NDA, Tej Pratap remarked, "We may have different political ideologies, but we share the same cultural ethos."
The former state minister and two-time MLA has been exploring various political options since his expulsion from RJD last May. After floating his own party in September, he contested the Mahua Assembly seat but faced defeat against the Lok Janshakti Party candidate.
Lalu's Surprise Appearance
Lalu Prasad's presence at his estranged son's event sent ripples through political observers. Though he avoided speaking to media, many interpreted his attendance as a bid for reconciliation.
Deputy CM Sinha commented on the family dynamics, stating, "After all, they are a family. They should be together on festive occasions."
The father-son relationship had soured dramatically last year when Lalu expelled Tej Pratap from RJD for six years. The expulsion came after Tej Pratap revealed a 12-year relationship in a social media post, despite being married to Aishwarya Rai since 2018.
Political Calculations and Future Moves
Sources indicate Tej Pratap has been actively exploring ways to stay relevant in Bihar politics. His options reportedly include joining the BJP and securing an MLC position. He has also attempted to connect with Janata Dal (United), though Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has not shown enthusiasm so far.
The Dahi Chuda feast tradition in Bihar serves as more than just a cultural celebration. It has become a platform for political messaging and alliance building among rival politicians. Similar to the Iftar feasts during Ramzan, these gatherings carry significant political weight in the state.
Meanwhile, other political events unfolded across Patna on the same day. JD(U)'s Sonbarsa MLA Ratnesh Sada hosted a feast for NDA leaders, while the BJP organized its own gathering. Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh attended the BJP event amid speculation about potential Rajya Sabha nomination.
As political observers watch closely, the developments suggest shifting alliances and potential realignments in Bihar's complex political landscape. The festive season has provided a backdrop for what could become significant political changes in the coming months.
