Kolkata, May 26 (IANS): West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday made several key announcements for the state's 2026 elections, promising a series of welfare measures and policy changes if his party comes to power. The announcements were made during a public rally in Kolkata, where he outlined a vision for a 'New Bengal'.
No Liquor Shops Near Schools
One of the most significant promises was the complete closure of all liquor shops located within a 500-meter radius of schools and colleges across the state. Adhikari stated, "We will ensure that no liquor shop operates near educational institutions to protect our children from the harmful effects of alcohol. This is a commitment to the future of Bengal's youth." He also mentioned that strict action would be taken against illegal liquor dens.
Rs 5 Fish-Rice Meals for All
In a move aimed at addressing food security, Adhikari announced that his government would provide fish-rice meals at just Rs 5 per plate through subsidized canteens. "No one in Bengal should go hungry. We will set up affordable meal centers across the state, especially in rural areas, where people can get a nutritious meal of fish and rice for only Rs 5," he said. The initiative is expected to benefit millions of low-income families.
Other Key Announcements
- Free Education for Girls: The BJP leader promised free education for girls from primary to higher secondary level in government schools.
- Healthcare Boost: A new health insurance scheme covering up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year was also announced.
- Employment Generation: Adhikari pledged to create 10 lakh jobs in the next five years through industrial development and skill training programs.
- Farmers' Welfare: He promised a minimum support price (MSP) for all major crops and loan waivers for small and marginal farmers.
Reactions and Political Implications
The announcements have drawn mixed reactions from political rivals. The ruling Trinamool Congress dismissed the promises as 'election gimmicks', while the Congress called them 'unrealistic'. However, political analysts believe that these pledges could significantly impact voter sentiment in the 2026 assembly elections. Adhikari, who is seen as a key challenger to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been aggressively campaigning on issues of corruption and governance.
The BJP leader also criticized the current state government for its handling of law and order, particularly in the wake of recent communal clashes. He assured that a BJP government would restore peace and ensure the safety of all citizens.
As the countdown to 2026 begins, these announcements set the stage for a high-stakes political battle in West Bengal, with both major parties vying for the support of the state's diverse electorate.
