Surat Municipal Corporation Elections Enter Crucial Phase
The electoral landscape for the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections has crystallized following the completion of the nomination withdrawal process, setting the stage for a competitive contest across the city's 30 wards. A total of 483 candidates will now vie for 120 seats, with voting scheduled to take place on April 26.
From Initial Filings to Final Contenders
The election process began with an overwhelming 1,059 candidates submitting nomination papers for consideration. However, rigorous scrutiny led to the rejection of 561 forms due to various discrepancies and procedural issues. The final phase saw 16 candidates voluntarily withdraw their nominations, resulting in the current field of 483 contenders.
Political party representation shows the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded candidates for all 120 seats, while the Indian National Congress is contesting 117 seats and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has put forward 111 candidates. The remaining 135 contestants comprise independents and representatives from smaller political parties.
Notable Withdrawals Create Political Ripples
The withdrawal process witnessed several significant developments that have added intrigue to the electoral contest. Among the most notable was BJP candidate Bharat Shamla's withdrawal from Kamrej taluka panchayat Seat 2. This decision followed protests by tribal political workers questioning Shamla's tribal status credentials.
This controversy connects to longstanding disputes regarding Scheduled Tribe status for certain communities residing in the Gir forest region of Saurashtra, an issue that has historically sparked social and political agitations in the area.
In another surprising development, Congress candidate Bony Patel withdrew from Ward 1, which encompasses Jahangirpura, Variav, Chhaprabhatha and Kosad areas. Patel reportedly submitted his withdrawal application without prior consultation with party leadership, departing the election office immediately after completing the formalities.
Congress officials later circulated videos purportedly showing Patel leaving the premises in haste. The party subsequently organized a protest demonstration at the district collector's office to voice their concerns about this unexpected development.
Additional withdrawals included Congress candidate Sanjay Ramanandi from Ward 18 (Limbayat-Parvat-Kumbhariya) and, in taluka panchayat elections within Surat district, the suspension of Congress taluka president Ashok Patel and his wife Sangita Patel for six years after both withdrew their nominations from Khudsad and Saroli seats respectively in Olpad taluka panchayat.

With the publication of the final candidate list, election campaigning is expected to intensify across all wards. Municipal authorities have confirmed that comprehensive preparations are underway to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling in strict accordance with Election Commission guidelines.
